New skates - Pain around ankles

Recommended Posts

I recently tried to buy some new skates, but I had some issues with ankles. When I tried Bauer D width skates the forefoot was ok, but i felt like around ankles there isn't enough space, when I laced up the skates there was like 8cm space between eyelets (3rd row from top) and I felt pain around the ankles, right to my bones from both sides. According to Laura Stamm's - power skating there should 4-5 cm space between eyelets, if it's more the skate is too narrow, if it's more then it's too wide. I think I wouldn't be able to get that nice wrap around my foot after baking them. I tried EE also, this time the ankle area was good but in the area of forefoot it was a little more space than I would like. When I leaned into the edges I felt I slipped a little (my forefoot slipped to that side of boot where i was leaning into). But maybe after baking them I would be able to get that wrap and tie them tight so my forefoot won't move. What do you think? I didn't know about the pencil test, should I go over to the shop and try it with D and EE? It could give me some hint maybe. Tell me your advice, please. Thanks

I had the same issues with the Bauer Supreme One80's. I have a bone protrusion on the inside of my left ankle and the pain was unbearable. I had them baked twice and that didn't help. I'm not sure if you're set on Bauer's or open to other brands. I went and tried on a pair of Graf 735's and the fit was unbelievable. What Bauer skate are you looking at? From what I have read on here, the Vapors are more narrow than the Supremes.

Supreme 60s. I'm not set on Bauer, I was thinking about Easton EQ30, but read here in some topic and also in other forums that Easton EE is more wide than Bauer EE. I don't want more width in my forefoot area because I tried Supreme EE and already felt like it could be more snug around forefoot. No Graf option in Slovakia. Reebok 6K D was awful around the ankles but great around forefoot. I can buy Easton from e-shop but I can't try them on. I don't feel like buying them since most people say that Easton D is wider than Bauer Supreme D, and also Easton EE is wider than Bauer Supreme EE. I used Bauer skate size gauge at the shop and found out that I should go with something between D and EE (btw size gauge said E, but Bauer doesn't make E width skates unless you go custom ). So I'm in the middle of D and EE, initial feel when I try D is pain around ankles snug around forefoot, when I try EE much less pain around ankles and little bit space around forefoot. Skates will come loose over the time but that pain is awful right now, I don't think it will make such a difference over time and fit good.

How about the Bauer Flexlite series? From what I hear, they are a little more forgiving and not as stiff as the Supreme or Vapor series. I was told that you have to give the skate a chance to break in, but like I said with the One80's, there was way too much pain and I couldn't walk in them let alone skate in them. It was too bad because I really liked the One80's but the heel depth wasn't deep enough for my foot. As far as the Eastons go, I would try to find a place to order them from that allows returns. I'm not sure what your options are in Slovakia.

Bauer Supremes are built on an oversized last so a Supreme D width is really an E. Vapors are true to size when it comes to width so a Vapor D width is in fact a D.

Even if the skates are good around my forefoot I have to consider the feeling around the ankles. I have no idea what the issue could be. The only thing I can come up with is that they're not deep enough. So I should fail the pencil test in wrong width. Tomorrow I'm going to try them and finally decide. As for Eastons I have an option to return them back, but the seller requests 30 days before giving back the money, also it takes time to handle my request...I'll go to my local store give Bauer a chance and have warranty, baking and sharpening for free. Just have to decide between D and EE. I think that if the initial pain in D width is unbearable nothing will help them to break in and fit good not even baking. So if it is horrible I will go with EE. Do you agree with me?

Well, not really many options for me, since I want to play this season and Bauer 7 size or any other brand is out of stock in all the shops around, so I can't try them on. I tried some RBKs(luckily I have found the right size and not half size bigger) they were much worse than Bauers. Couple of minutes ago I looked for some info about ankle pain and found out that after baking and breaking in it got really better. If after baking it's still some issues some people advice to have some kind of stiff foam around ankles and bake them again(I think if much wiser to do it first time if I'm sure I'll need some extra space) as this foam or anything you put around your ankles creates some extra space you need in order not to have sprained ankles. And you're right it's much better to have right fitted forefoot and then do something about the rest. I guess it's just me that I'm scared of anything that indicates buying wrong stuff, because last year I bought skates from some e-shop, they were one whole size bigger and I think wider also. So I want to have excellent fit right away, which it's imposibble and every skate need some time to break in.

Baking will relieve discomfort or turn pain into discomfort, it will never make pain go away entirely.

Here's a relevant question. Does the width rating of a boot relate to the ankle area, the forefoot, or the entire boot? From my experience, the ankle lock didn't seem to change among the D and E sizes of the same boot.

D/E/EE refers to the forefoot area, AA/A/B/C refers to the heel width. For the most part, ankle width isn't going to be significantly different.

I have no idea what to do now, I've tried all possible skates and picked sth from them up what could help me. Since they don't have my actual size I have to go with something they can order and then try on. So do I have to count on guessing? I have some old pair of Bauer Supremes Pantera, they are regular width but they are soft and two sizes bigger. I don't remember if I had any issues with them but even if I did they're beginner level so maybe I had enough power to break them in and fit. Now I feel comfortable in them in terms of width but they're too big for me. I was buying them when I knew nothing about fitting the skates.

Today I went to the shop in another city and bought CCM U+ SE Ovi, I was told they're similar to U+ 08. They were on sale so I didn't have to pay more than I wanted. They fit perfectly (btw they're D width) got them baked and sharpened, can't wait to skate. Thanks for telling me to keep looking for the right one. I also tried X:40 vapors and NB Supreme One 55s 7D both of them. I didn't have any ankle pain this time but forefoot just didn't fit. Also, maybe if somebody will read this in future, from today's experience Supremes were little more narrower than Vapors (most people tend to say supremes are a little wider, could be true, but I felt the opposite). Again, thanks for all your advice.
