Making helmet fit smaller

Recommended Posts

I just got a new helmet (Bauer 4500) and the fit is almost perfect at the smallest setting, but I would prefer it just a touch more snug. I can use it without it moving around at all as it is but I prefer it just a little tighter than it is now.

Short of returning it for a Medium, or wearing a skull cap, are there any ways you guys have tightened the fit of the helmet just slightly? I was thinking if there's anywhere to purchase those gel-type pads that come on higher end helmets with EPP foam, that I would just add one to each temple and the fit would be ideal. Is there anywhere I can buy just those individual pads?

Or anyone else have a different suggestion?

The problem is anything that makes it fit smaller is going to void the certification. You could also grow your hair out a bit. Since I cut mine back I've dropped a helmet size.

While Chadd is correct about voiding certs I have found a way to make a helmet fit smaller on accident. I sweat quite a bit so I install a sweat band on the front of my helmet similar to a gaolie mask. Not just any headband but a specific hand Halo headband. It has a small rubber lip on it to cause the sweat to redirect to the side of my head instead of down in my face. http://store.haloheadband.com/HALO_II_pullover_s/9.htm

They do make a skull cap but I find that my head gets to hot with one on. Hope this helps.

I second the headband idea. It's not an ideal situation for a contact league, because there'll be enough space for your head to move during a semi-hard impact so if that's the case you need to return it and get the proper size.

I used a headband from my goalie mask and glued some velcro to the forehead. Works like a charm.

Bingo! The velcro is how it makes the helmet that little bit tighter. This way I can also take it out and clean it. clean it as well.

I think we need a picture of the velcro glued to your forehead.

I cut the headband to fit only the front of the helmet. I then cut velcro to fit the same size. I glue one side of the velcro to the headband and the other to the padding inside the helmet. Not the best picture but here is the end result

Might have to go with the headband/velcro idea. Though I found some adhesive gel pads made for women to stick onto the inside of high-heeled shoes to prevent blistering, I might give those a shot first.

I play in non contact leagues for now, so I'm not all that worries about voiding certs or being a little under protected. If I start playing contact again I will most likely buy a higher end helmet for that anyways, or just revert to the helmet I've been using that fits tighter and has no modifications.
