mauihowie 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2012 So here is my problem.I recently purchased Apx skates and everything fits like a glove and is super comfy except for my ankles. What happens is when I tuck my tounge under my shin gaurd it rubs on my inside ankle and causes small cuts and swelling of my ankle ball bone. This has always been somewhat of a problem with me because I have very prominate ankle bones in the first place. It happened with my T1's and i shaved off the inside edge of the tounge and that helped alot.Becasue I just droped 800 on these skates i don't want to cut the inside of the tounge just yet.If I flop or go touges out if feels a bit better, but i dont know if flop will wreck my tounges.Currently i wrap my ankle in some tendon tape and it feels a bit better with that.Oh yeah i forgot to mention i dont wear socks.any sugestions?Left (much worse) (small cuts from tounge can't see)https://mail-attachm...95YUnuzk4T97mlsRight (actualy barley bothers me. Little cut but overall perfect fit)https://mail-attachm...B_Nya1vH_oSyLlM

AIREAYE 248 Report post Posted June 12, 2012 I believe the term 'Bauer bump' refers to the swelling of the bursa fluid sac underneath your Achilles in your heel, not what you have now. Before you try anything else, I would recommend letting it heal and then see if the proposed fix works. mgd150 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2012 My ankle bones protrude pretty far out, the bunga pad disks work very well, I cant skate without them.
JR Boucicaut 3805 Report post Posted June 12, 2012 Let's use the CORRECT term; Haglund's deformity.
vectoranalysisgo 3 Report post Posted June 12, 2012 Even though Haglund's refers to the spot on the back of the heel, (or Bauer bumps or whatever), and is an entirely different phenomenon, I understand what you're getting at by calling them Bauer bumps- it feels similar. I actually have the Haglund's junk going on (but I've got them figured out and generally under control), but I also get irritation on the inside of the ankle too like you do. This seems to come from the pressure at the spot where the edge of the tongue and the boot both push on the ankle bone- sounds similar to yours. Mine comes and goes without much rhyme or reason but even though I can't figure out why it suddenly gets irritated, it tends to get better with time off and then a more concerted effort to reduce the friction there. So I'd definitely second the recommendations to start wearing socks, even thin hockey socks, and maybe even padding over that if it's not too cumbersome... if you're really committed to not cutting the tongues. Though if cutting the tongues solves the problem, I'd say why not..That swelling on your left food is nothing to joke about. There has to be some major bursitis there- give it some time to go down and drain. Do you ice it? If not, I'd do that too.
mauihowie 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2012 Yeah I did a little foot bath alternating between ice water and hot. Seemed to help a bit but it still gigantic and tender. I'm going to wear socks and go youngest out see how it feels Togunes*
Davetronz 109 Report post Posted June 12, 2012 I'm not a doctor, but I'd recommend seeing if a doctor will drain that bursa (if that's what it actually is), or inject some cortisone in there.Wow...
VakarLajos 5 Report post Posted June 12, 2012 I hope your first reaction was, "I should seek medical attention" and not, "Let's see what MSH has to say"This is something that should be looked at by a doctor. There's a reason pro teams have team doctors and don't just ask around the locker room.Once you talk to a Dr, if there's something to be done with the skate, try and take it to the best pro-shop you can get to and have them look at it in person. mauihowie 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2012 well i talked to a orthopedic surgen, and showed him my skate. he said i should probably wear socks or use tape and to ice my ankle and rub cortozone on it. He said no cortozon shot because he doesnt like to give those to young kids because of joint problems and it wouldnt solve the problem and would likely become inflamed again. Davetronz 109 Report post Posted June 12, 2012 I wouldn't think that 1-3 treatments with cortisone would cause joint problems, but again - I'm not a doctor. I'd like to also throw in there that if left untreated, that's probably going to cause you a lot of problems as you get older too.The biggest thing here is getting that to go down in size, preferably close to normal, and then solving the skate issue. Anything you do to your skate right now probably won't have much impact until you treat the symptoms anyways.
kklinder 0 Report post Posted June 13, 2012 My go to for any swelling and/or bruising is soaking in a high concentration of epsom salt in very hot water...repeat when the water cools...maybe over a couple days. I recommend drinking plenty of water if you use a high concentration because epsom salt is a drawing agent.
