CCM Shoulder Pads CL vs CS

Recommended Posts

Looking to upgrade shoulder pads. I'll probably never really play more than pick-up, but I want to be protected and comfortable. Crazy light is probably overkill for my level of play, but I'm too old (33) to deal with crappy gear. I've been overheating bigtime in my Itech 220 shoulder pads, not to mention they're way too big for me. I was in between sizes and went large, should have stuck with medium.

Anyhow, I'm leaning towards the Crazy Strong since they're $50 cheaper than the CL and only a few oz heavier. My questions are

  • Does the CS not absorb sweat like the CL claim to? I noticed the CS have a "comfort liner", the CL doesn't apear to have a liner, just the U foam?
  • Hows the ventilation? It looks like there are holes all over the place on both... seems like that would take care of my overheating problem.
  • General thoughts; likes, dislikes, protection, weight, mobility, etc.

Thanks s_franchise, I saw those threads; lots of good info on the CL. I saw one guy mention he liked his CS, but I was hoping that there would be a few more people with some different insight.

Read through the referenced threads, but haven't found an answer to my question. This thread title suits it best.

I'm mostly concerned with ventilation as opposed to weight. Are the U+ CS markedly less ventilated than the CL, or is it roughly the same?

That's a far reaching question. I highly doubt anyone is going to drop ~$200 just to find out which one has better ventiliation.

From my experience, if I don't know nor feel that it's there, then it's doing it job properly. And so far, my CLs: fit (comfort), ventilation, protection, and mobility have been great.

Protective Lineup of The Year - CCM CL - Modsquadhockey 2012

Extra $50 doesn't mean much when you consider they will last years. Get the CL shoulder pads. I love mine.

I tried finding the same information you were looking for and like one poster mentioned, I don't think there's many folks out there who bought both to try them. I went with the Crazy Light and love them. They're light, they stay dry and they're beyond what is needed for mens league but the mobility and weight still make them a perfect pad. I don't really feel like I'm wearing anything when I have them on.

I appreciate my CL shouldies too. First piece of gear to dry, and they give me nice protection for the one split second out of each 50 hours of ice time that some prick thinks we are playing in a checking league (I play beer league, 99.9% of the time it is clean, but there is always one idiot who seems to get confused on one play, every 5 games or so). They are super light and mobile. Only legit gripe I have heard of them is that they are a bit bulky and the caps sit a bit high, but they do not bother me at all.

Only difference Is the weight it offers exactly the same protection , I ordered the U+cs and the u+cl shins I will update u when they arrive (not going to be anytime soon)

Can't comment to the differences between CL vs. CS but regarding the shoulder caps being bulky, I've found the exact opposite. They are much lower profile than my Warrior Projekts (the Projekts are size jr. xl and my CL's are size sr. small)

OP update: I ended up buying the Crazy "Strong" (back in 2012). They're just what I was looking for; light, ventilated, and mobility is great. They don't really absorb sweat like my ancient Itech 220's. Also, I noticed after I adjusted the bicep guard to the lowest setting, the caps seemed to be lower profile than before I adjusted. Still probably too high for no-shoulder-pad-guy, but for me they're great. I think the last poster was right not much difference between CL and CS other than a few ounces. I don't play in a checking league so I can't comment on full protection, other than to say they far surpassed my Itechs in that regard based on my occasional trip into the boards and open ice collisions with overzealous-game-7-guy.
