Skate profile for a 10 years old: 9' vs. 10'

Recommended Posts

Quick question for the these in the know: how much changing the profile from 9' to 10' might affect the agility of a 10 years old forward?

Realizing it's a vague question I just wanted to get some feedback since I was considering making this chage for my son since he's pretty shiFty, but could benefit from a bit more speed and stability for battling that a bit more blade on the ice would offer...

I'm not even sure this change is going to be very noticable for someone with such small skates (size 2 jr) so any thughts would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Honestly, I'd suggest looking into something like power skating for proper technique, stride and power, rather than trying to get minimal advantages out of changes to his skates.

There are so many variables, like ability, style, skate size and more but generally speaking if you change to a 10' he will get more speed and stability but will lose turning and agility. Only way to know if it will work well for him is to try it.

Yes, the skate size is something that a lot of people don't calculate when they do this. It was pathetic to see kids with 13" radiuses on a size 1 skate - saw quite a few shops do this in MI.

For clarification did you mean to say your son was pretty shitty or shifty? Either way I could see how one could possibly see benefit from a 10' radius, but the answer might be different.

Sorry guys - horrible typo - I meant to say shiFty!

my boy has been playing for almost 6 years now and is a very strong skater, just now that he's playing A level hockey things are more physcal so I wanted to give him a bit more blade on the ice without negatively affecting his agility which currently is pretty good.

I'm fully aware of what happens when changing the radius, just not how to relate these changes to smaller skate (sie size Jr 2).,,

You cannot give him more blade on the ice without effecting agility with a standard single radius. However, you may consider a combination radius. With these you can improve agility and balance and speed at the same time. So many would work well for a "Shifty" skater. :-)
