From Vanek to...

Recommended Posts

I've been using the Vanek curve from warrior almost exclusively for the past 2 years in college. Now that my blades are on their last legs, and this curve is no longer available, i seek advice on where to go from here.

I used to use to pm9/savard curve, but i like having an open toe. I also tried the Kovalev but the lie and rocker just seem to be too much and sometimes i had trouble controlling my shots.

I cannot use big curves at all as i learned on a straight stick. I am a shoot first player and usually use wrist shots more than anything. i also just want to buy a blade not a custom vanek stick

The P106 opens more in the mid toe and is a little deeper. Plays with a slightly higher lie however.

I personally have moved from the P106 as my exclusive pattern, to giving the Vanek a try after Keith's suggestion that it would be Warrior's closest approximation. I've since added the Burrows to my arsenal and have found the transition very easy and pleasant. In a sense, I've moved in the opposite direction as you, but have touched the same bases.

If you stumble across them, the Bauer P89 is a clone. I've seen some blades in stores but not very often. I wish Warrior or MyBauer would give the option for blades as well as sticks.

I'm in the same boat. Experimented with the Bauer P91A, Reebok Spezza, and Warrior Kovalev and Savard patterns and have had mixed results with all. To me, the Vanek was perfect for low slapshots, defections, backhands, and getting off shots quickly in the paint. I felt that my passing was a lot more accurate with the above mentioned patterns, but my shots were inconsistent.

Since I can't find a readily available retail pattern that suits ALL of my needs, I've been trolling for pro stock. I snapped up a couple of OPS Vector U+ twigs with the D-15 pattern which I like a lot. I'm trying not to get too attached because, as per usual with pro stock, who knows how much longer I will be able to get my hands on them.

Sher-wood PP09? It's a cross between the PM9 and the Drury/Kovalchuck/Parise type curves.

+1. I recently tried this and it seems to be the best compromise with the vanek going away. Reminds me of the old TPS Tucker.
