Helmet size dilemma

Recommended Posts

I have searched the boards and did not find an answer to my questions. I know some people think they had big heads...not as big as mine. I cannot even find fitted baseball caps to wear. My head size is a 8+. I am having a really hard time finding helmets that fit without making augmentations to it. I found the Bauer 5100 and Warrior Krown 360 to be the largest in XL but both are still tight.

A few questions:

Can anyone suggest a manufacturer with a larger helmet?

Does anyone know of a custom manufacturer for hockey helmets?

Does anyone know if the main manufacturers do custom orders?

Out of the two I listed the foam padding in the Warrior Krown looks like the easiest to modify. Is it worth shaving down the foam for a better fit helmet?

Thanks.

Have you tried on a CCM V08 or V10? They seem to fit larger than most. I've worn Bauer helmets in a Large before but I had to move to a Medium on my V08 and I only have it open to about the middle setting.

It's not just the overall size but the shape that is important. Are those Bauer helmets tight on the sides, front, back, or all of the above?

Tight on the sides on the bauer helmet. Tight on the front and back on the Warrior helmet.

Bauer 4500

None

No

You can't shave EPP; however, the 4500 is VN, and you can.

This. And the V08 as well.

OP, Helmets with VN foam, especially those with multiple densities and sections glued over top of each other are more versatile if you want to, say, 'change' some things. Voids warranty and certification I believe as well.

I wear an 8 1/8 or 8 1/4 hat. I wore a Reebok 4K in an XL for awhile, but it didn't fit great. Then tried the Bauer 4500... it fit better, not perfect, but better. I sent the 4K to my dad who also has a big 8+ head... he's been using it after modifying one of the layers of foam.

Have you tried a Re-Akt? Don't pay attention to Bauer's sizing guide for it. A large Re-Akt is pretty much an XL in every other line.

Also, I thought the Re-Akt was slightly wider than the 4500, meaning it's much wider than the 5100, which i believe was the dimension that gave you the problem.

Does the CCM V08 fit similar to the Reebok line of helmets?

yes and no. It is a larger and wider fit, like an RBK, but still not the same. Medium 8k was too small front to back for me, large 8k wasn't a snug fit. Medium V08 is perfect for me at the smaller settings.

My hat size would be 8 1/2. My head measures at 26in.

Thanks for all the advice. I will have to try on many helmets but in the end I most likely will have to modify one.
