New shoulder pads recommendations?

Recommended Posts

Hey Guy's just wondering if you can give me some advice on some new shoulder pads;

Here's a stock of shot of what I have at the moment; Ancient Bauer Vapor 4's

$T2eC16JHJHwE9n8igu5-BQMRfdYsZw~~60_35.JPG

I've just gotten back into playing ice after about 10 or so years off, I took a BIG mid ice hit in them then other night right in the chest and it was possibly one of the scariest moments in my life.

These things were great for Roller hockey as a kid, but on the ice they offer virtually no protection other than on the shoulders, and they're held together with bits of t shirt I sewed back on them as a repair after squirrels ate half of them.

The only problem is I LOVE how they feel, they're INSANELY light.

Can you guy's recommend me something for playing adult beer/lower league? I like to throw em, so something that offers a pretty decent amount of protection would be good; Anything mid-high end I'll need to order in at my LHS, so just wanted to test the water before doing so.

I was thinking of reebok 9 or 11k but was concerned that they'll be really bulky by comparison; I know there's gotta be a compromise somewhere, but most modern equipment is generally light as hell compared to what I'm used to anyhow.

Thanks in advance

I was concerned about bulk too, i did end up with the 11k pads though. Overall i'm pretty happy, the shoulders are bulkier than I probably need, but the rest of it is very good, not noticeable at all with great protection.

how old are you now? those look like they are for kids, no offense. thats probably why the hit you took the other night hurt a lot. im surprised you would go out on the ice with those. the reason why they are insanely light is because they seem to show no protection. there is definitely stuff out there that is light but still protects everything.

Personally I'd recommend something more middle-tier...I play a high level of contact hockey and have Bauer one80s. They're a step down from the TotalOnes, but still have the two-piece bicep pads.

I had to add padding to the back portion for my ribs, but other than that they're low-profile and move well. The Projekts look pretty glorious as well, but can't vouch for them.

None taken? I'm 27. 6' 4" and about 230 lbs!

Same as Konig, as protective as any pad out there but provide great mobility.

I've always liked bulky but light weight unrestrictive shoulder pads and have used Cooper Defender and Bauer SBD IIs in the past. I was going to upgrade to the Bauer Defender shoulders but I step in front of a lot of shots and decided I wanted something with a little more chest/abdominal padding. I went with the Bauer Pro Shoulder pads. They have nice bulk in the shoulder area, have very little restriction in arm movement and are a stripped down no frills version of the higher end pads without all the flash and color, but provide adequate chest protection. I really don't notice them at all come game time.

I've seen 3 broken collar bones in the last 7 years in men's league,, I'm not getting any younger the increased chest/abdomen and collar bone protection is what made me sacrifice a little mobility for increased protection.

If you want, a pro shop by me had a couple pairs of those vapor 4s hanging around when I was there last week. If you want, shoot me a pm and I'll see if they have your size.

Those vapor 4s were great. I never felt a thing with them on when I was playing contact hockey back in the day. There's also nothing ligher than those shoulder pads that offer as much protection because it had foam shoulders. The model that came after that was the vapor sp6, which is almost the same thing. There was also a cooper techniflex version of those shoulders.

For shoulder pads, CCM is the way to go. I was using Fit09 until I switched to CrazyLight. Fantastic range of movement, no bulk at all, great protection. They also don't make you look like a football player.

I debated on the Nexus 1000's but ended up getting the Nexus 600 and I love them. I took a hard hit in them recently, I bruised a rib, but could only imagine how much worse it could have been with a less protective shoulder pad. Great protection down the mid section with the Nexus 600.

Anyone use the CCM U+ 12 shoulders? Im playing fairly low level beer league, so I dont think I need to go all out for the CL. They seemed comfortable in store, but wondering about the protection level, and how they feel in game.

Thanks

I think anything around the U+ 12, U+ Pro, U+ 09 is perfect for a non-check league. I use the U+ 09 and love them. Lower profile caps, nice chest/rib protection and plenty of mobility. They are light and do not feel bulky by any means. Downside to the U+ 09 is that there is no "gut" protection like the U+ 12 and U+ PRO has.

I mainly wear shoulder pads in adult league because 1) I have a bad left shoulder that has been dislocated a few times and 2) I'm deathly afraid of taking a clapper to the chest and it stopping/skipping my heart.

Biggest thing is to get something that fits properly and doesn't float on your body.

Edit: Sorry....meant that I use the U+ FIt 09. CCM doesn't offer a U+ 09 in their current line. Closest thing to it looks like the U+ 12.

I've found most of the CCM shoulders to fit pretty much the same, regardless of model. Just a matter of features and protection. I'm over-generalizing of course, though.

They also possibly miles too small.

So what do we think between 11k, Nexus 1000 and warrior Projekt?

i just made the switch from graf 300 which are nothing to the warrior projekts. they feel just as light and have tons of protection.

I'm wearing modded Sher-Woods (Farrell padding sewn into chest and back) but after some badly bruised ribs I'm thinking of swapping too. I liked the CLs but the shoulder's "pop" up so much.

Agreed, I tried a few on at the LHS the other day, and the warriors felt the best to me.
