EQ50 skates

Recommended Posts

I have a pair of CCM U+12's that have less than a year of beer league hockey on them. They're in good shape and could easily go another year. I saw a sale online for EQ 50 skates for under $175. Is this price too good to let them go? Thanks

It's a great price for a high end skate, but at the same time you already have a fairly new pair of high end skates, and very few players need more than one pair of skates. I'd only go for them if you aren't satisfied with the fit of your current skates, and you know for a fact that the EQ50s fit you better. I would never buy a pair of skates planning to use them a few years down the line when my current skates die, because quite frankly your wants/needs in a skate could easily change by then.

With that being said, I change skates a lot less than many other players, so realize that this is coming from my point of view. I'm only on my second pair of skates in the last 9-10 years, and I expect my current skates will last me another 3+ years. Most other gear I rotate/upgrade fairly often, but with skates fit is king for me, I dislike breaking them in, so I wear each pair until they're utterly dead. That, and high end skates are (usually) damn expensive.

My idea was to shelf the EQ 50's till the summer

That's decently soon, my advice would be to go for them IF they're a great fit. If they're a mediocre fit (or worse), then you've bought yourself some $175 paper weights.

I agree with most here. If they fit you better than the CCM's then go for it. But your U+12's should last a while, and while I don't know what is coming out for CCM in the next year or two, you could see the U+12's on a similar clearance at some point. Then, if the CCM is the best fit for you, grab a back up pair on sale and your skate needs will be met for a long time. I have tried both skates on, and to me the fit differences are not huge, but they do fit different enough that one would be a better fit than the other.

I strongly advise trying skates on before you buy, if you can locally. If you can buy them locally for the same price, even better.

Personally, I'd just keep the CCM's since they don't seem to be causing you problems.
