What should I do if my blades are different sizes?

Recommended Posts

I bought some Step Steel and have been using them since August. My trainer sharpens my skates 1-2 times per week and I've recently noticed that my blades are different sizes. My left blade is noticably smaller than my right. I'm a bit concerned as I don't seem as confident turning, and I think the profiling I had done on my skates is messed up. Could my LHS even the blades out or will I need to buy new ones? I've never really heard of this happen before so I don't know how to handle things.

It's definitely possible to fix. Depending on how much steel is left though, you might want to start from scratch with new blades. I see this happen all the time. I try to even it out for my customers if I have time. I think a good sharpener should try to keep the blades near even. I checked mine after about 6 months and they were bang on. I was actually surprised how even they were. Mind you I try to make a similar amount of passes on each and if I cross grind one, I definitely do the other. I think its the cross grinding that really leads to this issue. It's likely that you tend to get nicks or edge loss on one blade more than the other and that one gets cross ground more. Just let your trainer know and hopefully he will be more careful from now on.
