Developing a foot/skate issue

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm quickly developing a thickening of the tissue directly under the big toe of my right foot. A foot who's ankle I seriously injured five years ago. I'm 45, skate 3 times a week since getting back in to the sport 7 years ago.

I brought my skates to Cookes in Willmington ma( trusted people around here) and they lowered/shortened the rivet that is right under that spot. While it improved symptom slightly I'm worried it did not get the cause.

I'm going back there and working with them in person but I was wondering if this is a common issue and what people have done about it

Confession time ,,, I actually notice the symptom more while walking bare foot or booted in my hiking boots than in my skates.

Help??? Ideas????

I doubt the ankle injury has any effect on the tissue creation.

You might want to wear some socks that have some rubber at the front, tighten the forefoot area, different footbed could also help out.

I doubt you would feel a copper rivet under the toe. I think Forbs02 has a good idea with the suggestion of a new footbed.

Sometimes it's just how your body adjust to everything. On the big toe of my left foot I've developed a callous on the side that rubs against the boot, nothing anywhere else, just that one spot one that toe. If it doesn't hurt or get in the way I wouldn't worry about it. Be careful if you try to sand it or shave it down. My son was getting a pedicure, his feet used to take alot of abuse when he was playing alot. The lady got carried away on his callouses and caused him alot of trouble with his feet. Your feet and toes are real prone to infections.

If you have a certain degree of pronation (falling inward) due to your previous injury, you could be applying more pressure to this area of your big toe.

As suggested in here, take care of your feet, make sure that callous doesn't get bigger/infected/sore.

A slightly thicker or padded footbed might help your issue.

I can't recommend changing your blade/holder alignment without seeing you in your skates, but someone knowledgeable in your area might be able to help with a proper skate alignment to reduce the pressure from pronating (if that is the root of the problem...).

I have to wear runners gel toe caps on my big toes when I'm playing because the sides of my big toes get extremely irritated and calloused from any skates (due to pronating), even with proper alignment. They help immensely, and combined with proper foot care, have let me continue playing relatively pain- and problem-free.
