Wrist Brace or Guard?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I play on a couple of novice level rec women's leagues. The last few games my right wrist has felt a little sore, like I must have twisted it funny somehow maybe playing along the boards. After a game it will feel sore, but it feels better before the next game. I was wondering, should I get a pair of wrist braces? or wrist guards? Would either of those help? I want to protect my wrists from breaking or straining.

Thanks

I would try a neoprene sleeve and or tape for support. A rigid brace would inhibit your range of motion. You may also want to look at exercises to strengthen your wrists/forearms.

Exactly what I was going to say.

there's a wrap around type neoprene brace made by Futuro that should be available at your local CVS. it has a hook for your thumb and then wraps around your wrist. when I get those little wrist sprains I find that it helps a lot and is very easy to play in.

I have the same issue where my right wrist gets really sore.

I always wear a wrist wrap similar to the one Shoeshine posted, except it doesn't go around the thumb. This one allows a little bit more mobility and not a lot of restriction. Works well for me.

I've fractured my left wrist multiple times and it never healed properly the last time. So short of surgery I'm stuck with a nagging/sore pain after games if I get a lot ice time or take a lot of shots. I'm a right handed shooter so my left hand (being the high hand) gets a lot of torque put on it. I will usually either wrap it with tape or use a neoprene support. As mentioned, do not go with a rigid brace as you'll lose movement. The tape/neoprene support has proved enough for my wrist and the soreness is noticeably less if at all.

That's the exact same scenario for myself. Previously broken wrist, shoot left so right hand/wrist takes the pain.

I use that neoprene wrist support as well, along with some clear tape to ensure it stays secure throughout the game. I've actually come to like the more secure feel on my wrist and have been reluctant to not use it in the past few months.

I just went through a few weeks of PT which I feel has helped, still not sure I'm 100% just yet. Time will tell.
