Getting measured for skates

Recommended Posts

How accurate are the devices at hockey stores used to measure the length and width of your foot. I have seen Bauer, Reebok, Graf, and CCM devices at my local hockey store that you put your foot on and his does the length and then the width. I'm curious because I ordered a pair of Reebok 11k online and I have always a been a D width in Bauer Vapors. So I ordered a D width in the Reebok 11k's. Tried them on in my basement and walked around for an hour and on my left foot the front right of my foot and front left of my foot start to hurt? Do I need a wider width or what? Is there a big difference from a D to an E width?

There's more to it than just the width; the shape of the skate has to fit the shape of your foot, both horizontally and vertically. That's why the standard advice for buying skates is to try on everything you can.

It's always best to get skates at your LHS, after trying several models, hopefully with an experienced skate fitter. It seems that you found out the hard way that there's more to the process than a basic measuring device. In some cases, only a custom order can get you the proper fit.

I never ever had to or wanted to use the width gauge on the brannock. Like wrangler alluded to, it's about trying them on. A fitter with an experienced eye can help pick out the most likely boots to start off trying.

"A fitter with an experienced eye can help pick out the most likely boots to start off trying." VERY TRUE

However why wouldn't you use all the tools at your disposal? I have people say there child has a really wide foot and I can use the Brannock to show them they don't when choosing a particular skate or vice versa.

I don't find the brannock useful or accurate in that regard whatsoever. There are too many other factors coming into play when fitting skates. I don't mean to sound pretentious at all, but I have complete confidence in my ability to fit skates given my training and what I've learned from MSH.

I know you've been in the business for a long time oldtrainerguy and I'm somewhat familiar with your background, so I have much respect for your opinion, thus let me ask you an honest question: what brannock do you use and how do you use the width gauge on it?

-end of what looks like a very pretentious post, sorry I can't convey it better-

No I totally understand what your saying. However in my fitting I like to use the width and arch length to gauge a possibe sale of superfeet or in some case a non sale of them when not needed. it just gives me an all around best picture and best practice.

Not along the fitting line but sharpening a quick story. I spoke with a very highly regarded OHL trainer that has worked much higher and he was telling me how he met up with ME Bob at an event and he told Bob he got his team sharpening time down to 2 hours for the 20 some odd pairs. Bob said "why are you ripping off your palyers?" Trainer said huh? thought about it talked to another buddy in the show and asked what he was doing. He said 3 3 and 1/2 on team skates. The trainer said your doing the full system? He said every time. So next practice he went and did 5 players skates using the full on system (everyone still has certain things that are there own) but all the steps. After practice 4 players came to him and said what did he do their skates felt unreal?

Trainer knew he couldn't "RIP OFF" his layers anymore and hasn't since, for me the same thing comes to fitting.

You get in some really young guy 8 or 9 and dad says yah give me those Bauers. You try to be nice he just says get them. This is when your knowledge of glancing and knowing comes into play that you bring out the reeboks or supremes cause this kid is as wide a s a barn door and those vapors just wont work. Then you can pull out the Brannock and show the dad.

Other times its the opposite and someone wants the correct fit all the way through. Then you have to fit them for everything socks insoles and skates that fit and function to there best.

Or then again I could be wrong.

Haha, I know.

Always on the look out for better or more efficient methods; something that attending business school has drilled into me.

I personally prefer the sticks to Brannocks, especially on small feet.

Love the Bauer Blue Stick, however--like everyone the fitting is so much more than the length.

Random question: how many guys come in saying "I have wide feet", but will fit say D width Vapors, or get measured at a slight E? The only guy I've ever found who had truly wide feet had a size 7EEE. Couldn't help him with our poor selection.

The older style blue Bauer stick with the white label on it is my preference. I hate the NBH one that has a different size for Supreme/Vapors.
