ZamboniFever 32 Report post Posted April 21, 2013 I am in the market for a skate sharpener and would really like to hear from anyone who has an SSM machine.www.ssmofnorthamerica.com/specs.htmlI have seen other people's skate sharpeners and felt the setup of the skate holder looked like a pretty clumsy process and these SSM machines seem to be easier with the arm that holds the skate. If anyone has any experience or opinions on these arm-based sharpeners it would be great to hear about your experiences. What would be even better would be to hear from someone in the Boston area that has one of these machines. Maybe I could offer up a gift card to a local hockey shop to have a chance to check out your machine before I drop some ridiculous amount of money on a home sharpener. Thanks for the replies... Chadd 916 Report post Posted April 21, 2013 I would be curious to see how these handle different thicknesses of steel. I would be concerned about the arm being balanced properly and not being off line at all any time I sharpened skates.
forbs02 20 Report post Posted April 21, 2013 I'm sure the user has something to do with this, but I have a couple of international players who will go to tournaments and come back with brutal skate sharpenings. Their team uses this type of machine. It just seems like it would be more awkward to use than a table and separate holder. I think it would be harder to get even edges for the length of the blade. XveritasX 13 Report post Posted April 22, 2013 I've never seen these around in my area. I would personally get one of the blackstone portable machines If I was you. I've heard pretty much universal praise for them. The skate holder takes a little bit to get used to, but once you have it dialed in your pretty much set. I looked at their testimonials and a few of them are from businesses. I would send SSM an email and ask if they know of any businesses using their sharpener around the Boston area, then maybe you can stop by and visit them. JR Boucicaut 3810 Report post Posted April 22, 2013 I personally know TJ (who left a testimonial on there) but I never saw his machine, nor have I used it. I do know that he has the original one, the SSM1.
