Removing bicep guards from shoulder pads?

Anybody do this? Bad idea? My new elbow pads bicep guard comes up so high that if I take the shoulder pad bicep guard off there is only a small amount of space between elbow and shoulder cap. Don't know how well the shoulder cap will stay in place if I do this

I just did this. Play in beer league - pretty low skill level (might be more flailing sticks). Shoulder caps flop around a little more, but I don't have to keep fixing my elbow pads while I'm on the ice. Taking a slash doesn't feel nice, but given the level of competition I'd say it was a good move.

all about protection, especially depending on the skill level. I just started ice a few months ago (loving it), and thought of going with a visor. A big hit to the cage over the weekend put that back into perspective.

If you feel that the bicep pad on the elbows are adequate, and that you wont get hit with a slash (or high shot) then its up to you.

In my opinion, the padding should have some overlap.

I've done it for more than a decade. I always hated the way the shoulder pads would conflict with the elbow pads right there. Removing the bicep pad on the elbow pad allows the shoulder pad to fit closer to my arm as well.

This is a HUGE mistake. You have obviously never taken a cross-check to the upper arm area. Modify the pad, but for your own protection do not remove it!!

This is a HUGE mistake. You have obviously never taken a cross-check to the upper arm area. Modify the pad, but for your own protection do not remove it!!

It's adult rec non check. not a ton of cross checks going on.

I play in the same type of league and took off the shoulder pad biceps guard. It was definitely the right call - try it for a game or two and see if you like it.

Have also done that for more than a decade (beer league player). Going to do the same with the CCM CL's as soon as they come in.

Do whatever works for you, I prefer the fit and feel of my elbows without the upper pad and the bicep pad from my shoulders covers more area than the pad on my elbows.

I took the bicep protection off of my shoulders. I wear relatively small elbows, but really couldn't deal with the bicep pad always rubbing up against the elbows.

Not once in 15 years have I been hit by a puck or taken a cross check in the incredibly small area that end up unprotected.

I, on the other hand, have been hit with numerous hard shots right in the small gap where I have no protection.

Hurts like hell, but I have nobody to blame but myself. At worst, though, it's a good bruise and a few days of soreness.

It's one of those areas where, if you're playing in a rec league, you're probably not going to get a significant injury even if you get hit/crosschecked, which is why I'm okay playing without it.

I replaced the wide elastic strap of on my shoulder pads with a lace and left it somewhat loose. After that, they didn't interfere with each other any more.
