Donjoy Knee brace for hockey

Recommended Posts

I have one and have used it for the past few years. It's bulky, especially around the calf, but now that I'm used to it I rarely think about it during a game. I do find that you have to modify the padding in your shin pads (I had to cut out some areas, especially around the brace hinges) to get a good fit and develop a bit of a routine to put it on with the rest of your qequipment. One observation is that the brace tends to cause some stress on the shin pads knee cap. My knee caps routinly split in half eventually on the brace side.

My bro has one, I'm not 100% sure if it's exactly that same model, but looks like it. And from what I've heard he hasn't had any problems with it. He has Bauer APX shin pads.

I've been using Donjoy's for 10 yrs. I'm on my 4th one now. My first 3 were like the one you posted, my last is not aluminum, it's carbon composite. Same brace, just different material. Either way, you will be happy with the support it provides. You can play normal hockey, no worries. It will require cutting of shin pad foam, what I did was take out the liner pad, it fit well when I did that.

The bulky comment is what i'm concerned with... Hopefully it's no where NEAR my CTI2 MOTOCROSS brace as far as bulk goes. I have APX shinpads as well. I'll modify best I can. Removing the liner or cutting to fit should do the trick.

Yup, removing liner will work. Have been on many different types of knee braces in the past, including the current donjoy defiance iii.

Would it be accurate to say the Armor and the defiance III are ClOSE in size as far as bulk is concerned?

I would think they would be very similar in terms of bulk. You might need to cut some of the liner, possibly the slash gueard if you want it to fit superbly.

I own a defiance III and was fitted for an Armor. Actually the Armor brace is a bit less bulky. The difference being the thickness of the metal structure of the Armor vs. the thickness of the carbon fiber structure of the Defiance III.

I was able to get my defiance under my shins, but it took major mods. I wouldn't want to wear them without the brace. When I ditched the brace, I ditched the pads.

Thanks for the reply..it seems the Armor is a few ounces HEAVIER than the defiance, but a shade bit less bulky because of it's construction material. I'll make it work!
