Dropping down to lower flex

Recommended Posts

It's all personal preference man. I use whippy sticks because you just let the stocks do the work for you. You don't have to try to drive through every shot. Dial it in right, and it's great. At least, that's how it is for me.

Rule-of-thumb is use a flex half your body weight. At 140 lbs you might want to look into an intermediate stick. I'm 5'9", 165 lbs and have a hard time loading 75/77 flex One Piece Sticks (OPS) after cutting them down 2-3 inches.

Why not try someone else' stick in that flex and see whether you are comfortable with it. I myself have gone from 100 flex down to a 85, 75, 70, and now back to a 80 flex. Its all about your own personal preference to the flex, curve etc.

Yes. The general rule of thumb which I find is too high for most players is half of your body weight. You should be at least a 74 flex. I use a 67 flex intermediate cut to a 74 and I'm 5'8 165 lbs. I prefer a whippier stick and when I cut mine down it's always too stiff anyways, so I use Intermediate.

Ditto. I'm right there with you...to the pound even. +1 for intermediate sticks...cheaper too ;)

Height is a much more important factor than weight.

I think model of stick plays a roll as well. Low kick sticks will always be harder to flex, but it usually allows for a faster release. Where as a more mid-flex stick will feel easier to load.

I've found that in a low kick I prefer a 65flex but in a mid kick prefer a 75flex. I also cut my sticks down a couple inches. The flexes I mentioned were precut.

I hate the half your body weight rule of thumb, I just think its hogwash.

In general I think people use too stiff of sticks.I think the majority of forwards are best off with a 70-80 flex stick, so you just have to accommodate for the height of your stick to achieve that. I have a 4" plug on mine so I use an 87.

Half your body weight is garbage.. no way I am using a 110 flex stick, I use 85/87

Meh, disagree. It really isn't much more important. It's more strength, weight, and technique.

I've seen players that are almost the same build but one is several inches taller, both can only flex the same stick. Then again there are short players who can use a 90 flex, while some taller players can only use a 74 cut down to an 80.

Being relatively average build and shorter than most people I can't flex well above a 74. I have a 74 flex that feels like an 80 and the only reason I'm comfortable is because I like the curve and stick, and I feed passes all game.I do not work on UBS. Yet my friend who is several inches taller than me can barely get anything out of a 74. Heightness not always increases the ability to load your shots.

Low-kick sticks I feel are generally harder to flex. Vapor 6.0 74 flex feels like an 80 compared to a Total One.

The half your body weight is not a general rule of thumb, it is a guideline. Different preferences always play in factor.

Low kick sticks will FEEL harder to flex because the flex point is further from your hand.

This is probably what I was thinking of.

Correct. Sorry, I stated it better when I mentioned the mid-kick feeling like it will flex easier. Low kick feel harder to flex.
