Trying new stick waxes

Recommended Posts

So I am going to buy some Sex Wax and am looking to try it out on my new Vapor 6.0
I've used wax probably 3/4 times before but felt the quality of the wax (Luckeys) didn't make much of a difference. Switched over to Howie's and taping in a different way, so deciding to try out some Sex Wax.

I've heard some people wax their stick hours before a game and then use a heat gun to melt it? I'm looking for any suggestion on a "best" way to do this. I don't think waxing right before a game is going to help much, I would wax hours before either way. I'm 19 and can use a heat gun if necessary.

How do you guys wax your tape?

Usually I just 'puck' my tape job prior to waxing. Pretty much take the same premise as the 'heat gun' method but with the more subtle affect. I don't think there is a 'right' way to wax a stick since sticks are so personal. Some people don't even use wax.

I usually puck my tape as well, then go over with some normal candle wax (in Italy you don't find anything good easily) on the bottom of the blade to let the tape last a couple of practices.. i don't overdo with wax so I haven't had any problems during the latest months.

Right now I'm just used to have tape waxed so it's become like not having wax like it was for the first months this year!

I usually just remember to tape the blade right before I get dressed or right before I walk on the ice. I like the wax being a little sticky when I get on the ice, it really helps grip the puck

I would melt and rub in the wax way before the game. It would make the tape last forever. The down side is that after a game or two the tape and wax would loose it's stick anyway. You may still have a perfect tape job but the dust and dirt from your car, locker room, and where you put your stick is now covering it making it useless.

I now only but some on the bottom half of the stick prior to the game to repel everything and help dampening the puck and a but heavier right on top so the tape doesnt come off so easily when people hit the top of my blade

I will usually wax when I retape. I live in Arizona, and my sticks stay in the grauge so the wax will melt down. When I get to the rink I'll wax the bottom of the blade and where the puck usually stays.

I've found that stick wax evaporates after application (when spread thinly), especially when your stick is stored in a warm place. I tape my sticks the night before use, then wax the tape in the locker room before I get dressed.

I've used Sex Wax for nearly 20 years. I apply it to every portion of my stick blade covered by tape, then rub it in with my thumb to work it into the cloth tape.

Thanks for the opinions guys,

Didn't think about how the drive and air might effect the wax. I think I'll put a light layer of wax hours before a game, melt it, then wax when I get to the arena. Bottom of the blade and face seems good, as long as it covers where the puck should be.

Hopefully this helps the duration of the tape while not getting too much or too little wax.

Sex wax is the only kind I use. Usually apply it right before I step on the ice or about an hour before the game. I never heat it but do smooth it out with my fingers. It preserves the tape job and gives you super soft hands. When I did an internship with a local AHL team I saw the players using canning wax then melting it. I tried that but it didn't work nearly as well, personally.

I bought lucky's for the container, tape, puck the tape then wax... Game on!

That's actually exactly what I'm doing haha.

I have the tape and then wax, rub a white puck in to not mark the white tape up. If you try it on black tape it just marks the puck though.
