Can someone recommend me a skate?

Recommended Posts

I've been wearing the original Bauer T1's 7.5 EE for almost 5 years now. Has been a a very good skate for me but was never the "perfect fit".

I have a very wide forefoot and regular width heels...... the Bauer T1's were fine in this regard. However, the depth/volume of the skate was a little undersized and I am prone to slight lace bite. I've gotten around this by skipping the top eyelet and lacing really loose on the 2nd/3rd eyelets. I get great ankle bend and love that!!! but I know that it sounds like a formula for breaking my ankle!

So..... I've been itching for a new skate. What do you guys recommend? Is there such thing as a perfect fit or is there often a compromise? Would going the NXG custom route help and would that even allow for a deeper boot??..... i just don't want to get stuck with a $1000 if its not a perfect fit as obviously its not refundable.

Should I consider another brand/model??

Thanks guys!

if you have the money to spend, might as well get custom made ones. its the only way your going to get your perfect fit. If you already like the total ones, might as well stick with em too.

Do you know if custom retail would adress the instep/depth issue?

AFAIK, custom retail just takes measurements as opposed to getting a "mold" of your foot. Correct me if I am wrong.

Thx for your help!!

Try the RBZs in perhaps a 7EE or 6.5EE.

Thx for the suggestion.....something to consider.

I would ask your local pro shop, but i know JR and Chadd would be able to fill you in best on here.

however, I know Bauer has an epic ton of options to pick from, so I'm sure with your foot measurement you can get what you want.

The short answer would be yes. It would require either a Bauer rep or a trained associate to undergo the process for you, which would cost a premium on top of regular retail price. There's no need to consider custom unless you've exhausted retail options or have a lot of money to spend lol.

No problem; don't just consider it, try them on and find a place that offers a demo program.

Have you tried on the Nexus 1000? Deeper boot and a bit softer to get that play in the ankle you like without going 3 eyelets down.

http://www.modsquadhockey.com/forums/index.php/topic/44935-how-to-order-custom-bauer-skates/?hl=%20custom%20%20bauer

here is a link i found on here for custom bauer stuff and what they can do for size wise.

Thx. I did read thru that whole link. What I got from it is that experience of the fitter is crucial.... Else i wouldnt take the chance of a mess up. I'd love to go to JR or Darkstar to get me hooked up but they are too far from Toronto. Someone please Post/pm me if you have a trusted name in the Toronto area.

I did and I will try it again at the LHS. i might be biased just because I am used to the lightness o T1's and the Nexus was noticeably heavier.

T1's and Nexus 1000's should be about same weight in a 7.5EE size. I wear a 7.5EE in both the NXG and Nexus. The 7.5EE Nexus line all are made with a 263mm holder while the T1's are 272mm. Even in EE (Which I wear). I first thought there was a screw up but confirmed thru Bauer that ALL Nexus 7.5EE are a 263mm holder. Now 7.5D I think both lines will be 263mm. I switch steel back and forth between 4 different skates I use and I had JR mount 272mm holders on the Nexus 1000 skates. Check them out when you are at your LHS for sure. One more thing the Nexus run wider then the T1 too in size, you may want to try on a 7.5D in Nexus first for fit.

Thank you for this VERY valuable info. I'd LOVE to get a skate off the shelf that fits properly. I'm definitely gonna go back and try the 7.5EE (i think I only tried 7.5D last time and it fit too narrow..... my feet are really wide).

Does the shorter blade/holder (263 versus 272's) on the same boot make much difference on the ice? SImilar to a shorter radius profile I am suspecting??

IMHO, not really. A 9' radius is a 9' radius, whether it's on a 263 or a 272, the same amount of steel is in contact with the ice. There may be a short adjustment period because the toe of the runner is slightly further back in relation to your foot, but I would hazard a guess that most people wouldnt notice after 5 minutes of skating.

I just checked weight specs at HM. The difference in weight is 708gm (NXG) versus 810gm (T1) per skate........wether or not that is noticeable i will try again at LHS. Even the difference of weight in LS Fusions versus other steel is very noticeable for me...... I guess I am spoiled ;)

This makes sense. I re-read Maddigits post..... its now obvious he swapped holders just so his steel could be interchangeable amongst his different skates

That was what I was getting at. The Nexus 1000's in 7.5EE with the shorter holder and steel (263mm) should shave weight off and make it closer to the T1 (272mm holder/steel) in weight then what is listed on sites. They weigh 8D's when comparing. (Both 8's are 272mm).

I recently ditched my NXG's due to lace bite and forefoot width issues and ended up with U+12's a half size larger than my NXG's. I'd recommend trying on CL's and/or U+12's if your local shops still have them. I couldn't tell the difference between the two models, and I didn't care about the ~100g weight increase since they were much more comfortable than my NXG's.

If you want to stick with Bauer, I'd also recommend trying on Nexus 800's, as those have a different fit than the 1000's.

I would be interested to see if people start speaking more in terms of ratios, than subjective descriptions. For example, what is a "very wide forefoot"? Is that a 4 inch forefoot: 11 inch foot length? I do not not know. If I knew, then I could offer my ratio (which I could measure, I do not know it off hand), and then tell you how my ratio is doing (brilliantly) in my One.9 LE Bauer Supremes. This is by no means a criticism of this thread creator, I just wonder if it would facilitate better communication. (I would do a measurement now, but my feet are in my boots, and I am working on breaking in my skates as I wear them around the house.)

When a local guy saw my feet (I was wearing sandals at the rink, he said, "CCM feet," because he thought my feet were wide. My ortho surgeon and show specialist both say I have avg width feet, so I don't know. But I know that my 10.0 EE One.9s fit pretty nicely.

Cheers.

I see your point. Average foot width, but you're wearing a true EEE width last in a EE one.9...

So, does that mean that my boots are thinner, or thicker, than a traditional EE?
