Has anyone tried out the APX and the DT1?

Recommended Posts

I got myself a DT1 and it's been great. I tried out an AX1 but found that my shots are much better with the DT1. I've always wanted to try the APX and there's a sale tomorrow at my local shop so I was thinking of buying one. Has anyone used both and can provide some feedback?

Yes I have, and yes I can. What type of player are you and what is your size? Do you like to power very hard on shots or do you let the stick pick up some of the work. these will all go into what stick you like better.

this is my findings using using the apx then the dt1, both being the same exact curve and using 87 and 85 flexes that were both cut down to the same exact length, which would feel like a 100 or so flex.

i started with the apx and switched on over to the widow then very shortly after the dt1.

the biggest characteristics of the sticks are that the apx needs you to put power into it to give you that big shot back, this is great for guys that muscle shots. the dt1 will load much easier and it prefers to do the work for you, to the point where if you really hunker down on the shot, the shot kind of dribbles away on me.

for durability they are both about the same, i had the apx for a year before i sold it bc i tried a dt1, and i have had the dt1 for a short spring season and it has held up well.

puck feel for me is better on the dt1, where with the apx i knew the puck was on the blade, the dt1 i felt like i knew more where on the blade it was, this was also during roller hockey as well with a lighter puck.

The dt1 besides not feeling as stiff as the apx felt a bit quicker with release on quick shots. i surprisingly got a lot of in traffic shots off and to the net that i didnt think i could have.

One big thing is also the shaft shape, the apx is very rounded and thats why i picked it at first it felt very good in my hands. but i then switched between the dt1 which had slightly more shoulder to it, and the apx and i should the apx to be turning in my hand during faceoffs and some harder shots. the dt1 filled my hand better but never gave me that huge, boxy, unwieldy feeling i got from say an easton rs. for me it was just right but for others it will vary.

IMO the DT1 is one of the best shooting sticks out there. It had unreal "jump" and the blade was easy enough to use. Great all around stick. Only issue that seems to happen in the toe chips and chips away, mine is almost square at this point. This has happened on both my DT1's, funny thing is the stick still shoots well.

Odd you mention that. Both my dt1s came to me through warranty and both had "chips" in the same exact spot of the finish despite being new. Nothing big but my prestick prep of water thin superglue around the outter edge of the blade, then one dust coat of the krylon non skid filled it in a little and I've had no issues here.

I've played with both DT1 and APX. I currently use the APX and probably prefer the DT1 over the APX. And really for the reasons that Souldriver mentioned. The APX is a great stick, but to be able to choose between the two I'd go DT1.

I think Souldriver's analysis is spot on but a true comparison would have been a 77 APX vs. an 85 Widow as the APX plays stiffer than marked and the Widow plays softer than marked. I initially went with an 87 APX coming from an 85 RS, and it felt way stiffer than my Easton forcing me to "muscle" shots instead of letting the stick do the work (my ideal/normal shooting motion) as described above. When I switched to the 77 APX, i was able to fling it with minimal effort by letting the shaft load and do its thing.

well i think its good to compare the two at the same flex bc it does truly show how the flex plays. your statement backs that up by saying the 77 apx plays like the 85 flex dt1.
