Graf outsole

Recommended Posts

I think I might be having some issues with the composite outsoles on my G-35s. Unfortunately, I don't own a digital camera, and my scanner is on the fritz, so I'm going to have to explain...

The outside of the composite seems to have been cut right by the balls of both my feet, so now some of the inside composite is exposed, and a little bit jagged (think unfrayed snapped shaft). So far I have not noticed a change in performance, nor much deterioration since I first noticed the problem.

Is this a normal thing with Grafs? Or is this going to become a major issue? Is there anything I can do? Should I take them back and try my luck there?

They are all like that.

VERY SLOPPY - I did a swap for mojo122 last week and I couldn't believe it. The insole actually came apart in the front when I was removing the RMS anchors from the skate, and whenever I tried to drill, it would come undone. By putting rivets in it, it'll hold, but still. The outsole was very sloppy as well - one of the heels was skinnier than the other.

So is this going to be a huge problem? What would you suggest I do, JR? I'm happy with the way the skates are performing, but this has me worried...

Would this be covered under warrantee? If so, what options would be open for me? I have the sneaking suspicion that this is going to become a hassle.

I should have waited for the XXXs to be released. I never had a problem with any of my XXs this soon after I bought them.

I just picked up a pair of G5's and noticed the same thing after taking a shot off the inside of my foot. Part of the outsole freyed so I took a little bit of the tuff toe for skates and put it over there just to do something about it. I haven't noticed a performance issue either though. I'd give that a shot or maybe try some kind of epoxy just so there isn't those freyed fibers.

So is this a common problem with the G Series of graf? Or does this happen with the 700 series as well. I am planning on picking up some 705's next week since they dont have junior sized Gseries.( even though i would probably still go with the 700 series anyways.)

I believe JR also noticed that they pre-drilled holes for cobra's and then just enlarged them to make the t-blades fit.

Yes.

Notice that the holes aren't even lined up correctly. THey are both to the left.

My feeling is that they are pre-drilled for Cobra and add those for t'blades.

did the pro toe stuff that you used help this any?

i have a pair of G5s on order and do any of you think that his is a big enough reason to cancel that order? i love the feel of the skates but i dont want them to only last a few months...

I don't really think that it is that big of a deal. I haven't noticed anything different when skating and it hasn't been getting any worse. From what I've seen, most every top end skate has a flaw, this being Graf's. I don't think it will have much of an effect on the durability. That's the only thing I've had wrong with my G5's so far though.

Going back to the original topic of the outsole/insole, I changed holders from the Cobra to a Tuuk Custom + and had the same problem that JR was having. I do a ton of skate work and know what I'm doing and have never run into anything like this before. I wouldn't change holders on the G series unless you really have to. PLus, I got a ton of splinters in my hands working on them.

Bumping this old topic. Was this problem eventually resolved? I think my rep can snag me a pair of g9 for like 175. Is it worth it? Also, can I unscrew the RMS and check the outsole?

It wasn't, which is why the G series were discontinued in favour of the Ultra series which has the transparent plastic outsole plus a strip of carbon fibre on the insole.

The insole/outsole separation never caused me any problems. It was more of an issue for JR when he was removing the t-blades and installing the Pitch holders. What drove me crazy was the liner and its ability to soak up moisture and hold it in.
