Measurements for custom skates

Recommended Posts

I was hoping someone in the forum would be willing to recommend someone very proficient in measuring problem feet for custom skates. I'm missing my first two toes on my right foot, and have been through several pairs of different brands of skates since losing the toes, and tried on many more. The bumps are getting pretty bad on my right heel, and I get some pretty bad toe box squeeze and lace bite on that foot when I skate more than around three times a week, and worse when playing in the league (unfortunately, no season this year for work reasons, but not going to miss another if I can help it). I did get measured at a local (small chain) shop, but the person doing the measuring was not terribly confidence-inspiring during our interaction, and if I'm going to drop that much money on a pair of skates, I want to feel confident that I will wind up with something that will work. I live in Colorado, and work in Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico, but am willing to travel pretty far for the right recommendation. Thanks!

I don't understand why you have confidence in a remote fitting without that person going off things you're telling them. One of the first things I tell people when I do a fitting is that there's a reason why you came to me - while I'll accept input, quite frankly, I'm going to see things you aren't going to. But I will explain what I'm seeing, and what to fix it.

To the OP - if you make it up to MI, stop by.

Yeah, that's right - I will do custom skate orders now. But it's an in-person appointment, and certainly not done through MSH posts.

JR - What made you change your mind about doing custom fittings? I thought I read somewhere that you weren't doing it anymore for whatever reason.

Fwiw I had emailed Scott a while ago and while I'm sure he's quite competent at what he does I agree with Jr that an in person fitting is really the way to go. Having just ordered some with Jr I can say he's very thorough.

+2 for JR.

I'll order my sons skates through VH, but he has very normal off the shelf feet and he's an amazingly talented and technical skater.

I on the other hand have horrible feet. EEE ball, A heel, tremendously high volum & deep instep, 1/4(1/2 can't remember) or so size difference in length and a bone buildup/bump on my left foot due to an injury.

JR spent over an hour and a half or so on my custom fitting, skate selection, measuring, sizing, options etc.

I'd recommend making a road trip out of it, if your going to drop close to a grand on custom skates, it's probably worth a little extra to get it done right. Especially if you have seriously off feet.

Thanks for the info, and especially thanks for offering to fit me, JR. I'll have to see how soon I can make it to Michigan. I'm moving to Montana soon, so it's a bit of a haul.
