Does a Shorter Radius Require a Deeper Hollow?

Recommended Posts

For example, I'm currently on an 11' radius w/ an FBV 90-50 and would like to move down to a 10' or 9' radius. Will I need a to change my FBV setting to something w/ more grip or do I have it backwards and require less grip? Thanks.

No, In fact you probably want to keep the same as you are going to a more "agile" radius and the grip from a deeper hollow might give a slight learning curve.

Changing something doesn't require changing another. Depends on the feel you are looking for. Make one change at a time to dial it in. Baby steps.

However most often with less blade on the ice going into colder times and harder ice you may after a few skates feel the need for a little more grip. But as suggested do 1 thing at a time.

If you reduce blade on ice this will increase grip of current hollow as more weight is on the surface area, it is not dispursed as it is with longer radius. Generally though no hollow change would be needed, even less if you are on a FBV.

That makes sense. Like how someone can lay on a bed of nails and not get hurt b/c there are so many nails, there's not enough pressure on each nail, but if there were like...only 4 nails, well that would suck.

wouldnt you say that harder ice is a better reason to go deeper than less blade? And what does less blade have to do with more grip? You want the less blade for agility, extra grip is going to slow you down more and make a more "agile" if you will blade into more... as you will be deeper in the ice.

Exactly the same advice I would give. If you make too many changes at once and end up not liking something, it'shard to figure out what caused the problem.
