APX Vapor fit/breaking in

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Just bought a pair of APX - size 7.5D - got the older model for 30% off from my LHS.

Tried on almost every skate in the shop, went for the best fit.

After a bake, 3hrs general skate and 2 hours scrimmage it seems my skates are a tad big.

Length seems good (toes touching cap when standing, pulling away from cap when knees bent) and width is ok but there seems to be too much volume (above foot area). Already tried some thicker footbeds and thicker socks.

Since they are a stiff boot I'm wondering how this skate broke in for others - perhaps once they soften a bit I can crank the laces down some more and reduce the volume?

Cheers.

You might want to bake them again so the skates can wrap better over your foot if they aren't already. I know superfeet will add some volume if you're not using them already.

A friend of mine actually had a similar problem and he had a lace bit pad sewn onto the inside of the tongue to fill up this space. It ended up working out pretty well. You could look into that.

You could also look at swapping out the tongue for a Supreme style or similar to take up some space. I have low volume feet as well, and this worked for me.

Went back to LHS and tried next 1/2 size down. Which seemed too short (toes still touching end of skate with knees bent and the wings on footbed removed) So I will try one of the suggested methods of replacing or adding something to the tongue. Funny I have a low but wide foot. CCM's might fit better but no one in my state stocks them as far as I know.

Im assuming you tried the smaller size on without baking them. When I baked my APX's it pulled my toes off of the toe cap. Might be worth seeing if they'll bake them for you.

You can go to Skaters Network in Ryde and get the superfeet yellow insoles, they do take a little volume away but you'll love them..

I bought my skates there and staff there are really helpful!

Yeah, I know Wazza, nice guy. Though I bought the skates elsewhere.

I put a layer of 1/8" neoprene under tongue which helped.

Got superfeet which was a big improvement, but still too much volume. Since I've scrimmaged in the skates I think it would be a task to negotiate a swap. And the size 7 would prob need stretching anyway, even after a bake.

Is it worth trying a rebake, but not crank them so tight this time? I do remember the skates felt tighter before they were baked.

Appreciate the suggestions, cheers.
