Skate Fit Issue (MX3 versus Nexus 8000's)

Recommended Posts

Hi there. Looking for some much needed advice.

I'm coming from original TO's 7.5 EE (5+ years now). Length and heel lock were always great while the forefoot width was slightly narrow but manageable (junction of the toe cap and composite boot). My biggest issue was that the depth was a bit shallow for me . Unless I skipped the top eyelet and went loose on the 2nd/3rd eyelets (which I always did), I would get some minor lace bite. All in all, it was still a very good skate for me.

I recently tried a Nexus 8000 7D and although the forefoot and depth were good and improved, there was just too much slop in the heel ( this despite the length being 1/4 to 1/2 size too small ) . I've even tried those stable 26 socks but it was still nowhere near the amazing heel lock I could get in my old TO's.

The LHS rep was hesitant in recommending going the custom route ( not sure exactly why but something to the effect that they are not truly custom in fit).

I'm thinking 3 different options at the moment.

1) TO MX3 retail 7.5 EE

2) TO MX3 custom - can depth be increased going the custom route?

3) Nexus 8000 custom - specify narrow heel?

Truth be told, I'm a bit hesitant going the custom route just because I can't try it on and it takes a leap of faith. At the same time, I feel a little silly shelling out for a top end skate where I've already had some depth issues in the past ie supreme TO's.

What would you do (financial aspects aside)?

Thanks for your expertise.

I would try different brands on until I found one that fit, ex mako/mako2, new tacks, 20ks, rbz, etc. I would only choose custom if I knew nothing else would fit.

Reebok 20K. It has the pump. Downside: Softer boot, about to be phased out, and support for the Reebok brand can be a bit meh.

That or a lot of the wide feet crowd seem to like the CCM RBZ line.

I really wish I could offer VH Footwear for custom skates (it'll feel like you're wearing a comfortable yet sturdy sock that just happens to be on a blade), but due to the tendon guard design flaw (breaks far too easy), I unfortunately can't recommend it.

Is this really true?

I thought with custom they practically mold the boot to your feet?

I am thinking of going custom route too (I have wide V shape foot)

No, it's because they don't know what they are doing/talking about.

Thanks for the replies so far. I just read the custom skate thread and looks like theoretically I can get what I really wanted all along (an MX3 with increased volume). Trick now is to find an experienced fitter that I can trust.

Can someone tell me if the terms "increased lacing" and "high vamping" mean the same thing?

JR when it comes to Bauer customs, is it ALWAYS a Bauer rep that comes to the store and does the measurement and stuff or store staff does it and then sends it to Bauer?

Sorry to hijack your thread endomaniac.

Answer to that question is a Bauer rep does the measurement usually NEVER.

Lol, I liked how you answered that. I was under the impression they did.

So i guess it is REALLY important to go to a store where the staff knows what he/she is doing.

How do I vet out if the person doing the measurement is trained and competent?

Thanks!

Ask them questions like if they know how the boot fit is, ie Vapors are for more narrow feet, Supremes are middle of the road, Nexus being the widest and deepest. And I'd even ask for the distinguishing features bwteen models in a certain brand, like the difference between APX2 and X100/X90, etc.

If all a person does is put your foot on a measuring tool and tell u that your a size X and a width Y, then they suck IMO.

But the problem is that you guys are assuming that everyone does what only a handful of people do.

This is what is putting me off going customs, as I have no way of telling if the person doing the measurements actually have both experience and actually knows what he/she is doing.

Heck, I am in Toronto and there are so many great hockey stores. But, I have only been to a handful and just to browse around so I have no relationship with the staff. So I do not even know who is the most experienced as all of them say they do it.

I know doing customs are rare. Given most kids/players just want off the shelve latest top of the line skates and buying new ones almost every season and compromising fit.

Given the big bucks involved I want to get it right the first time (obviously there will be the minor tinker here and there)

JR, if you had a shop in Toronto I would have just dropped by and end of story.

I've never had custom skates, but do know that the guys at Just Hockey and Majer Hockey are generally very knowledgeable. I'm sure there are others. I just know I've dealt with and overheard competent staff serving other customers at both of those stores. Going to one of them should be a pretty safe bet.

The custom skate is only going to fit as well as the person fitting you. I really wanted APX2s but I couldn't get fit for them because even with increased facing/quarters and traditional lacing I was not passing the pencil test

I have a pair of custom MX3 with traditional eyelets and +2 sizes larger facing and quarters. No more lace bite, I can lace them tight throughout the boot and I don't have to skip any eyelets. My heel is super wide too and they gave me a B width heel with a C lower. For the little extra I think it's worth it, you're going to have to wait for them though and make sure the place you go to knows what they're talking about

Thanks to JR, althoma1, precision and darkstar for helping me take the custom skate "leap of faith".

Going to see the custom skate fit guy later this week at Just Hockey (talked to him and he's fitted some local ex-nhlers). Will report on the results (may take a few months?) after I get fitted, receive the skates and skate in them. Fingers crossed.
