Skate quarter package question

Recommended Posts

I can't seem to get a good answer on this so I thought I'd pose the question here. I'm wondering if the quarter packages offered on high end skate offer more protection from impacts, such as slapshots, than lower end models would.

Reason I ask this is that out of the last 6 games I've taken 3 really hard shots off the foot and each was very painful and made it hard to walk the next few days. I have the Reebok 16k skate, I've been meaning to upgrade so this had me wondering if I did upgrade to the 30k or top of the line Ribcor would that offer a nice jump in protection against those types of impacts?

I know another option is skate fenders, which I am considering as well. But if the jump in skates gives me equivalent or close to it protection I'd rather do that and get the extra benefits too.

It doesn't really matter what skate you wear, if you take a hard enough shot it's going to hurt. Shot blockers or skate fenders would be your best bet. I wore them all last season and they were great. Probably saved me from a couple broken bones.

The issue I've been having is that it's not the really hard shots hurting so I'm not sure if it's pure bad luck and just getting hit in the right spots or if it's the make up of the skate itself.

I agree the only true way to maximize protection is going the skate fender route but I'm really curious to see some other thoughts around the impact of the higher end quarter package as well.

I'm almost thinking getting the skate fenders regardless, from reviews they seem light enough that they probably go unnoticed.

The Higher end skates would offer more than a low end skate, but not very noticeable protection difference to a mid-range from the high end. As said before a puck to the skate will hurt either way. Best option is going with the skate fender

I haven't tried the bumpers yet, but I was having the same issues with blocked shots until I purchased my Bauer Vapor X90's I have taken a few blocked shots off of them and compared to my CCM U+07's my feet still get the sting, but no bruising and or broken bones. From a couple guys I play with, they have the bumpers and stand by them. They are also a bit cheaper than getting a new pair of stakes.

My MX3 and apxr2 boots made no difference to the pain from a decent slap shot onto the boot. Fenders are the only answer. Note though they don't provide frontal toe impact protection, just curl your toes and hope it doesn't break anything if the puck hits there.
