BlackEdge Runners for Bauer Lightspeed Edge Holder

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

Just saw this is available on eBay - http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Pair-of-BlackEdge-Hockey-Skate-Blades-Runners-for-RBK-CCM-Bauer-Easton-Graf-/261435979062?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&var=&hash=item3cdecc7536

Has anyone tried this and what radius does it come in, from the picture it looks to be similar thickness to say Bauer LS3 Runner..

looking forward to feedback and comments. Thank you!

Oddly all the runners they show except for the Bauer Edge are stamped Blackedge. Bauer's Edge runners are proprietary and I would think they are selling these illegally.

I stand corrected, read below

From the listing itself:

***Please note that the blades for the LS Edge holders don't have a BlackEdge logo. They have been coated with the patented BlackEdge technology. Bauer has a patent on the holders which only allows us to coat their blades and not actually manufacture them. End result is the exact same as the blades for the other holders listed.***

If this is the case, then I don't think its worth the extra money over say normal LS2 or LS3 runners..

So its more for looks than any actual purpose?

Isn't the coating the actual purpose with Black edge runners?

I've skated on Black Edge for the LS2 for the past year. Prior to that I was on Step and LS3.

In my experience the Black Edge steel does not burr as much when sharpened. I do feel it holds an edge much better than the other offerings on the market and I am not sharpening as often as I used to.

However in terms of value I would choose LS2/LS3 steel as long as you are sharpening your skates on a regular basis. Step is priced higher than the LS3 ($99 vs $69 where I'm at) but I did not see any significant improvements that warranted me spending an extra 30 bucks.

The BlackEdge coating definitely holds an edge longer and stronger. I usually sharper my skates every two weeks, which account to about 6-8 hours of ice. When I got the BlackEdge, I wanted to see how far I could go and got to 16 hours before I sharpened them. I did a camp that was 12 hours of ice over the weekend and they were still sharp at the end. And even towards the end of the sharpening, they still have some bite. And burrs seem to have less affect on the edge as with regular steel. I really think they are worth the extra money.

Step steel is definitely better then the Bauer steel. It's a harder steel and holds a stronger edge. Plus it's always straight, whereas Bauer stock steel has a tendency to sometimes be warped.

I wonder if the coating helps with the wobble of the blade in the holder? Right now still using tape on older holders to keep the blades firm.

I think I've seen Dana Heinze do that with all his holders.

Just saw at Dana Heinze's twitter feed of his work for the Penguins. He uses thread seal (pipe tape) to hold them tighter. It was demonstrated on a pair of CCm E-Pro Holders.

Yes but that wouldn't be thick enough for some of the holders. That would work on the newer holders! Thanks for the find. It took a bit to find it.

I ended up switching out the LS Fusion from my MX3 and replaced it with LS2..

Not sure why but LS2 fits a lot tighter than the LS Fusion that came with the skate, both was alright but the LS2 needed more force to get it in!

That's good to hear. My fusion rattles a bit in the edge holder, but not when I put in the LS3. I will be making the switch once i get a bit of milage out of the fusions.
