Toe box and breaking in skates

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Just bought a pair of Supreme 180 since Vapors were too narrow in the heel for me but I do have a problem. Both my feet look like to be the same size to me and I wear socks while skating. But my left foot feels fabulous while my right the end of my toes is brushing too much in te toe cap.

Coming from vapors I have noticed I'm using a forward lean a lot on my right foot ( my strong side) but is this just a matter of breaking the skates in? It's not crunching my toes but enough for me to feel it and be annoyed by it

It's my first time skating with them. when taking out the footbeds both my feet are pretty close to the end. I was fitted with a 6 skate and am teetering between a 7.5 shoe and an 8. Thanks.

Yeah I forgot to mention that too. I had them baked when I bought them. That's exactly what I'm describing in my rambling though

I was also wearing two sizes too big skates before so maybe it's an adjustment? Just wanna know if this is normal.

It's not uncommon at all for feet to be slightly different in size. Most people don't even realize it until they get fitted properly for skates. Another bake might open up the heel a bit more and allow you to slide back farther. A thinner pair of socks may also work for you.

Some LHS's do have the gear to punch the toe cap out. If, after a month or so of skating has allowed the heel to settle into the pocket fully, then you might consider this path if the toe still bugs you. It's not uncommon to do this if you have different sized feet and are not getting custom boots made.

Would punching out the box effect

The length or just the width? It's actually

The tip of my toes not the sides.

I also have a pretty big bauer bump on that foot which makes it ever so slightly longer than my left.

Just don't want to buy new skates (again). It's not painful but more of a neusance to feel the end of the toebox. Add to the fact I want to use bunga pads if irritation happens again. I tried putting on my skate barefoot and it definitely helped but I feel like that would be extremely uncomfortable and could cause pain.

What thin socks do you recommend? Currently wearing a pair of Bauer Performance .

You can do it to change the length, but you need to make sure you're taking it to a knowledgeable shop to get it done. In my understanding, they need to heat the area slowly and evenly before stretching it out. Doing it too quickly or not heating enough can cause the glue to crack rather than melt, and then you've got a whole other issue on your hands.

I'd do a rebake just on the skate with issues first. One other thing (other than length) that could be affecting it is you may have gotten a better mold on the foot that feels alright if you put it on first coming out of the oven and the short skate had a longer time to cool.

I mean I'm

Pretty positive it's the heel that's pushing me into the toe. Coming to think of it I think the bauer bump is not letting my foot sit on the footbed and kind of "floating" above it. This is where the rubbing occurs in that exact spot.

The bauer bump is also what is making my foot longer than the other.

Is baking the skate twice going to

Ruin the material and make it softer? I just am frustrated and can't tolerate the pain any more

No, regular skates can be baked up to 2-3 times, and curv skates like the 180 can take even more. If you're positive it's the bump, then start looking for a place that can do a toe-cap punchout and make sure you get their best tech working on it.
