Bauer APX2 Lace Bite

Recommended Posts

I am experiencing some bad lace bite recently on my bauer APX2s. I have had them for about 2 years, got them the day they came out. I use them a lot, and just recently have been getting some mad lace bite. I have a feeling its because the tongue is starting to break down too much. On one of my skates (the one with not as bad lace bite), the hard plastic part of the tongue is actually broke in the middle. I am assuming this is just from overuse, but I am not sure.

Do you guys recommend just replacing the tongues? or trying to use something like the g-Form lace bite? Also, I have a big showcase next weekend may 30th, so I really need a solution that will have me skating without the lacebite that weekend.

Thanks!!!

The same for me too!! There was absolutely no lace bite for me in the two years since the very first day on ... but in the last couple of weeks experienced the same. Now I am eager to test the new tongue on the 1x skates.

I wish I had the funds to drop $900 on another pair of skates, but I really want to make these works. Or are you ordering just a replacement tongue?

I am ordering the current vapor model - 1x skates. They improved the tongue compared to the APX2 (think they addressed these problems on the tongue when I tried them)

The conspiracy theorist in my head says how convenient (for Bauer) that lace bite settled in just after the next model came out.

I had wicked lace bite in broken down tongues and cut a mouthguard/horseshoe shaped pad to channel the pressure off of the tendons on the face of the shin that flex when to lift the foot up with respect to the ankle. From descriptions of a Forsberg pad on here (Vet88 has a nice description of how he made one here), it sounds like that's what I made. I still haven't seen a picture of a Forsberg pad, so I can only go from the image I get from reading its description.

For my pad I just cut the 3" off the heel end of a cheap insole I wasn't using anymore and then cut out a notch in the middle and then put it in my sock like an upside-down "U," leaving the void in the middle right over the irritated knot in my tendons; I felt neither any pain from lace bite nor the slightest hinderance from the pad between my shin and my tongue from the very first strides I took with it in. I think it took me 2-minutes to make at the rink with just common household scissors.

Do you have any pictures or anything? I read that post, sounded like a good idea but for some reason I cannot picture it in my head and cannot figure out how to replicate it.

Do you think replacing the tongues would have worked aswell? I am perfectly cool with doing that if Itll work

Yeah, I can get a picture up tomorrow if I can find the piece. I may have thrown it away because I didn't need it anymore. If that's the case, I can do a quick sketch of what I did.

My guess is new tongues would allow the irritation to clear up, but you may still want a pad to alleviate the pressure initially. In my case, it was very precisely located, and just wearing mid-top shoes would aggravate it a bit when it was at its worst.

I recently made the switch from a supreme TotalOne NXG for this reason. The tongue had worn down and lace bite was beginning to take it's full effect keeping me off the ice.

I'm about 6 skates in with a Vapor 1X boot and problem solved. In the interim, Bunga Ankle Sleves had me back on the ice. I tried the Bunga Lace Bite Preventer but found that I needed the extra gel in the ankle sleeve.

Also speak with you LHS about replacement tongues. I was very close to ordering some from Bauer via my LHS but decided to upgrade into the 1X.

How much were they going to charge you to order a tongue from bauer? Also, how long did they say it would take?

I tried to replicate this with no success, any chance you could try to explain more? maybe how you put it in your skate? or something...
