1x vs APX2 skates

Recommended Posts

So I'm in the market for a new set of skates, as my current pair are over 15 years old. I went and fitted several levels of the Bauer vapor line, the supremes, ccm jet speeds, reeboks, and easton. Without a doubt the vapor 1x fit the best, hands down. Of course they are the most expensive out of all of these, and no matter what amazing deals all the online retailers offer, no promotions or coupons can be applied to new bauer products because of their MAP pricing. Fine. I get it. So for a while, I was looking at picking up a pair of last years APX2's, as I understand they fit pretty much the same (although I've read that the 1x has a little more volume). The only problem was, EVERY site I looked at was out of stock in my size. I searched every site almost weekly for over a month. A couple of days ago I decided to go through and check all the sites again, and low and behold, I found a pair of APX2's on Amazon, being sold through Pure Hockey at a ridiculous price.

I don't mind spending the money on the 1X's, because I know I will be getting my money's worth for a long time. But when you consider the fact that I can save over $300, and still get a top of the line skate, its kind of hard to justify spending the extra cash on the 1X's.

My question is, are the 1x's that much better of a skate? Would I even be able to tell the difference? I play 3-4 times a week, and I ref about 6 games a week, so I'm on my skates almost every day. I loved the way the 1X's felt in the store, and all of the new fancy technology thats in the 1X's sure do make them seem worth it.

Edited: Amount of savings of APX2 skate.

Frankly, if you're going to save $600, I don't think you're going to notice that huge of a difference to really justify spending the extra money. I find myself always buying last year's top model of things when they go on clearance/sale. I do this primarily with high end sticks. Personally, I'd just get the APX 2. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

I'd argue if you're saving that much money, go for the APX2s. It's kind of foolish to do otherwise considering you're getting a top-of-the-line skate.

I have to correct myself. My skate size is actually a junior size, so instead of a brand new 1X skate costing $900, they only cost $650. So I'll save about $350 by getting the APX2. This is still a significant savings to be sure... but not as much as I originally posted.

Still. Even if you said you were saving $150 bucks. Other than the Speedplate, I don't think there's really all that much different that would justify the price difference.

Go with the APX2s, that's not an insignificant amount of money. Try them on before baking them, worst case scenario if you still prefer the 1X Amazon has a pretty good return policy.

i just upgraded to 1x from x60s. still getting used to them but im not super impressed by them so far. i guess i just need to get used to them being taller thats the main thing thats killing my skating right now, the blade angle for everything has changed. also i feel a bit disconnected from the ice with the boot being further from it. the boot is odd. it is comfortable but it always feels like i didn't tighten them enough even though my foot is planted in there. the speedplates seem rather gimmicky. i like the tongue. very comfortable. not worth retail price for sure but i got them for 600 on ebay

Thanks for the feedback... although, I'd say you probably would notice a pretty big difference between the x60's and even the APX2's, as the x60's are 5 models down from the top. There a lot of things different between those skates and they are the same year.

I came across this today. It might help a bit with your decision.

Thanks for posting this video. I have been reading all the spec differences between the 1x lines and the APX2 lines, and comparing them... but hearing someone explain those differences helps.

I was mainly hoping to hear from people who went from the APX2's to the 1X's who could tell me their experience in switching, and whether or not they were happy with the switch.

they were the original top fo the line x60 skates. not the current ones. they changed the name of the original x60s to something else now. so i dont think the difference will be that large since they were both top of the line when originally released
