wood blade mod's

Recommended Posts

I have shaved off the outer shims (up to the fibreglass) to fit some standard wood blades into tapered shafts.

Yes, wood blades.

Ktang...shaved off the outer shims? My hope is to shorten the wood shaft to the same length as the composite blades and then shave/chisel down the neck...

Back in the day of the T-Flex I did this a lot as I would get free standard blades but used tapered shafts. I was never really precise with shaving down the hosel and the results were mixed. Some blades were fine, some blades must have gotten weakened and would snap off at the hosel.

I think as long as you shave them down evenly and the wood isn't dead you should be alright.

The blades that I did this on were Eastons that had 2 fibreglass reinforcements, with wood bonded on the outside of that to form the cheek of the tenon. A small sliver of that wood was on the outside of the fibreglass to get the tenon to standard dimensions. Shaving down this wood almost to the fibreglass reinforcements worked for me.

I thought about shortening down longer T-flex blades and doing the shave to make them fit, but didn't get around to it.

I knew a guy who would buy the Sher-Wood 5030s on sale, then chop off the blade and shave it down to fit it onto his shaft. It was hard to get Coffey curves for shafts, and he liked the curve. So I think that shortening the blade and shaving it will work.

I have been thinking about getting some wood laminate, setting the curve, and bonding it to make a blade once I get some time.

My biggest problem is I like the Smyth curve from warrior. BUT they don't make a Smyth curve anymore. But you can take a warrior zetterburg and bend a little of the toe and you have the Smyth curve.

My current rig is a warrior dynasty 75 flex tapered shaft with a Smyth dolomite blade. I would love to have more of the curve, but really want the 75 flex shaft.

So with eleven hockey and boa out of business you have to resort to customizing yourself. A recent Coffey curve did not fit like the Smyth and I don't like the Kovalchuk curve as much either. I've had some Easton Yzerman and they worked well for me.

The weight on many standard wood blades is crazy heavy(most are over 200 close to 220 grams) I have tried some blades I've had to shave weight...but reducing the hosel length appears to be the smartest option for lowering weight.

I balance the stick with a wood plug and the rubber grips. I never thought about reducing the hosel length too.

I have worked with heavier shafts and lighter blades to avoid an unbalanced stick. The wood plug doesn't seem to hurt...But a heavy blade just kills me. But it depends on where I am playing...Offense I like a lighter stick (475g), defense I want a heavier stick (500-525g)
