Is 95 flex too stiff for me?

Recommended Posts

My friend gave me a pro stock G3 Jeff Halpern stick that is 95 flex. I have shot with it off the ice and it is very nice. I have used a 77 flex NXG for some time now. The G3 is shooting much harder and feels better in my hands. Will it be too stiff once I play with it on the ice? I am 6'3 and 165 pounds. I am able to flex it off the ice, but will the same be said when I take it on the ice?

Do you know the length of the stick? The length will affect how easy it is to lean into it for a shot. Likewise, do you plan to cut it at all? Put the stick up against your NXG. What's the height difference if any?

It all depends on how well you skate. If you are still able to transfer the energy through the stick, you will be fine. Generally, you will lose a little bit when going from dry land to on ice.

FOR ME NOW...using a 100 flex stick in A level play really helps me control receiving the crisp passes better. There's no flutter, and the puck just dies on my blade. shooting is a different story. I'm also in the 165lb range.

They are the same height. 60 inches.

It's definitely going to be stiff then. It will be great for receiving passes and slap shots, but you will feel a difference in your wrist shots for sure. At your height, it shouldn't be a big problem, but you will need time to adjust.

I have been working non stop on my snapshot lately. I find it is easier to shoot that than a wristshot with the 95 flex. Am I wrong in thinking that?

Slap shots will come off harder with a stiffer flex. It offers more resistance when hitting the ice behind the puck. Lower flexes offer more whip when dragging behind the puck to push it forward. Hopefully that makes sense.

Why not just try it? Bring both sticks, play with the new one first, then give it a shot. Who knows you might just like the G3 better, but if you dont at least you have your primary there to use.

Its all about personal preference. Some lighter players like to have a stiffer flex, some bigger players like a whippier stick. I'm 6ft, 185lb without gear, and love using an 80 flex prostock.
