newer tacks same as PRO tacks advice..

Recommended Posts

I'm wanting to send a brand new pair of tacks to my dad for his 73rd. birthday.  He loves his old nasty CCM pro tacks, even though they are (IMO) too big, and heavy.

The man has skated at junior A level in his youth, coached, and even did a walk on tryout for the Rangers in the late 60s. He's one helluva skater and teacher. I owe ALOT to him for being such a great inspiration to me and my brother growing up learning the game.

I tried to "teach" him about proper fit, but he wanted NOTHING to do with his toes anywhere near the cap. He barely laces his skates, and always never laces the top eyelet. I'm done arguing with him about this, so a single size down from his shoe size is what he'll get.

On to the question..what's the closest CCM skate that has a similar fit to CCM PRO tacks?  I don't know what model they are, I just know they weigh a ton and have some white spider looking plastic crap on the sides of the skate..

Thanks all..

Z

Honestly, if they're pretty old, they probably have more of a "classic" fit. I'd venture to guess that the newer Tacks would be similar in fit. I'm not 100% on that and could be wrong, but that's what it seems like to me.

I went through a similar scenario myself a couple years ago. I was looking for a replacement for some late 90's tacks that were just literally falling apart. I found the Reebok Ribcors to give a similar fit. Those then changed to CCM Ribcors and I think the fit changed, but I'm not certain. A Bauer Nexus might be worth trying out. At least for me, one of the toughest things was getting used to my feet feeling like they were in casts as compared to my limp noodle 90's skates with over a dozen seasons on them.

I'm pretty sure the Nexus would be too large a fit overall...I've been eyeing the 5052 tacks.. Medium overall fit.  IDK, this is such a gamble...

nice nice nice still skating at 73....im playing shinny regularly....one player is 84 years old, he shows up once in a while..  he's rocking the straight blade Rocket Richard style.

in the early 2000's  i played outdoor hockey once with Pierre Pilote....former Black Hawks captain, 3 times Norris trophy winner, and 3 times runner up.

he was in his 70's back then and his slapshot from mid ice was top corner.    i played a 2on2 with him....best day of my life.

Very cool your dad is still skating at that age.

Something to consider, your dad may not enjoy the stiffness of today's modern composite boots. You might want to look for something a bit more traditional in terms of build and materials. Maybe something like a Graf or the tec mesh versions in the Nexus line might be more to his liking (though the nexus may be too wide).
