STX Surgeon RX2 Durability?

Recommended Posts

Can't necessarily comment on the RX2, but the first edition a buddy of mine had. He purchased a brand new one, took a couple of slap shots with it, and snapped the stick in half. Again, this is in regards to the RX1, but it could be a hint as to the durability of STX sticks in general.

FWIW, I have only used 2 RX2.1 sticks for the past year (until this summer). One is still going perfectly strong, and then the other just seems to have recently gone "dead" in the blade, but there is no visible damage, and I only notice the deadness on slapshots.

I've vacillated between a 60 Flex (Intermediate) and a 75 Flex (Senior) RX2 over the past 6-8 months. The 75 has held up well while the 60 is starting to chip and fail in the blade, on the bottom toward the heel. Therefore, I'm in the market for a new 60 Flex. I was hoping to score one from the annual Perani's warehouse sale, but they used the word "sale" quite loosely. I did talk to the STX rep there, and he was all for stepping down to the RX2.1. He says the only difference is the blade, and the 2.1 blade will hold up much better than the RX2. With some nebulous "performance hit" of course.

All-in-all I absolutely love this stick and think I'll hold out to find a new RX2.

I suspect that alot of that "performance hit" with the RX2.1 is in its blade heaviness. Using these RX2.1 sticks for the past year or so has been a supplement to my fitness program (and I do not think that I have dangled anyone during that time). Shot-wise, the shots come off pretty strong with 2.1; so I am not sure that there is a huge performance gap between STX Surgeon RX2, vs. STX Surgeon RX2.1. But the blade heaviness is brutal in the RX2.1 (unless you appreciate a good upper body workout while you are playing hockey). Overall weight of the CCM Tacks 7092 is about equivalent to the RX2.1 (same pricepoint stick), but the Tacks 7092 feels like a high performance stick to me, balance wise, after having used the RX2.1.

Still tho, if STX RX3 comes out with the P30 curve, then I will be on that (even if they cannot figure out the balance). I am a believer in that PureGrip tech.

Honestly I wouldn't be interested in the price point RX. If a stick explodes on a couple of shots usually it's defective and not an indicator of overall durability. The only thing I'm on the fence about is the dual weave in the blade. The front 3k and back 18k I believe. To me THAT seems a bit gimmicky. I didn't mind the shaft shape but also wasn't sure how sold I was on it. It shot well, that's basically where I am at now and wouldn't mind giving one a try since they aren't particularly popular. Would I pay full price for one? No way but if I found a new one online for $100 or so I might grab it.

That's the exact price point I got my RX2's at. I doubt I'd be as pleased with them if I had paid retail.
