Heel lock in new 1X'S ?

Recommended Posts

Short story Im coming from apx skates & also had 2015 1x's last year for a decent amount of time ,  both purchased used & fit great no heel slipping what so ever.Vapor boot seemed to work for me .  Just curious if anyone else has experienced this with brand new skates .Went ahead & jumped into a new pair of 2017 1x's & I have heel slipping not a lot ,but enough to notice. I know heel lock was supposed to be improved in the 17's . They are sized properly etc . can this improve with a re-bake or simply breaking in ? I have had them baked once , but had thicker socks on then what I usually wear to skate with & I also could've tightened them a bit more for sure , not sure if that's part of the problem here  . I have probably 3-4hours or so in them . They feel great otherwise hate to sell them . I have tried bauer & ccm socks to no change . Heel pocket seems to fit me fine , not to narrow or wide .

I was under the impression that the ‘17 model locked in the heel better than the previous model. I bought the ‘15 model and had to sell them because my heel slipped too much. I now have the Jetspeed FT1’s and they’re great. I think I’ll go custom the next time I buy skates.

I find this strange.  I had the older 1x models and the heel lock was acceptable at best. After a few skates my right heel would lift.

The NEW 2017 1X in the SAME size has excellent heel lock, with improved padding location in the heel as well.  I baked them once and have at least 10 skates in them,

if anything, they fit better now, but a much inproved locked in feeling compared to the older 1X especially in the heel.   Your post surprises me.

Did you change sizes??

Are you using the speedplates?  If yes, remove and try the stock shitty ones.  Those should put you deeper in the boot.

You shouldn't have to overcrank the laces, but try waxed if you're using unwaxed..

For whatever reason maybe they run slightly bigger . Never had a problem with 7D's before , but tried the pencil test this morning laces out foot just brushing the toe caps and the pencil drops right in . So would my next step be to give a 6.5D a chance. this could explain the slip

If anything, I think the new 1X runs a bit tighter, due to the placement of the heel padding this year.  I went form a 6.5 to a 7.   Sounds like your 7s may be a bit big though.  I had to step up a half size because my feet were crammed in 6.5s

...   the pencil test does reveal you've got too much room there.  If your able, try a 6.5, and if they fit better, sell your 7s..  SORRY to hear this, as skate fitting can be a real bummer..

BUT...before you trow in the towel, SUPERFEET take up a lot of room, and may assist you with heel lock.  You could also use ankle booties, as i had to, in the previous 1X. They work quite well, snugging up the ankle, and adding that extra few MMs you're looking for.

Yeah tried superfeet as well. Didnt do much . Im going to try on 1's just for giggles to see .Had my feet measured tonight accurately & 1 foot is a 7 and the other is a 6 3/4 so  I think ill be crammed in 6.5s . Yeah bummer new skates can be a pain . Thanks for the info man .

If that pencil drops in on both heels when you are in a 7 then you will get into a 6.5. Trust what your foot in the boot tells you, not some arbitrary measurement even if they claim it's accurate. Get the length and heel lock right then punch out the rest of the skate if there is tightness anywhere.

And 1's won't help, a wider heel pocket to a 1X.

Yeah Im going to try them on while im there . I hear mixed stuff with the 1s' , the 1s heel should be wider ? which could make my heel lock worse

Not yet , going to try on various sizes and the 1'x 1's tomorrow & see. I was able to verify though its minuscule my 15 1x's which are retail, are a tad smaller(length wise) then the new s17 1x's i bought . Both were retail.  Maybe pairs can vary slightly ? not sure if anyone else has experienced that . Ill update early next week with what i get, after i skate on them .

slightly, I'd imagine.   But enough to make a difference?  I doubt it.  (if they are the same size)

Went ahead and did the 3d scan today , did it twice 2 different bauer skate socks & one standing , once slightly bent . Dont recall all the specs but i'm a medium for forefoot/heel measurements with a low arch. First suggested skate was a 1S in a 7D , also recmnd. a 1X in a 6.5EE which I was swimming in odd.Tried on 1x's in 6.5 ee as well as 7d . Neither of which was for me . Then tried on 1s in 7d and it was spot on unbaked. Great heel lock , passed the pencil depth & length tests. Dont feel like lace bite will ever be an issue either , as I would get periods of it in vapor boots.  I have been using vapors on & off for years .
