Something is wrong with my 8090's and i'm not sure

Recommended Posts

As some of you guys know, I cracked the steel on my Bauer 8090's a few days ago. Well I got the steel replaced and went to public skating today so I could skate on them before my game tonight just to make sure everything was right. I got tired REALLY quickly and I noticed that I was leaning back more on my heels, but before I had an aggressive lean forward, my 8090's never felt like this until I got the new steel put on on.

What do you guys think is wrong? I'm thinking mabye the steel I have is a different radius than the stock steel that initially came on my 8090's.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Um...did you have a forward radius on the first set of steel?

I honestly have no idea, I had whatever the stock radius was. I've still got one of the unbroken blades from the right skate that didn't break and I held it up next to the new steel and I just can't see a difference with my untrained eye. Here is a picture, I know it's crappy quality but you might be able to see something that I can't...

I dont know that this is the solution to your problem but its an observation that a co- worker made at our shop. All of the bauer runners are not cut the same. Some have more steel, some less. From what I can tell the rocker and pitch are the same throughout but potentially you could buy a new pair of runners and they could be two different heights, significantly different. Just an observation, I would check your runners just in case.

The radius and pitch varies from blade to blade. They are massed produced by subcontractors and crated by the hundreds of thousands, and shipped to the assembly plant. The subcontractor is allowed some variance in specs, so one blade could have a 8.5 radius and the other a 9.5, you never know. I find that about 80% of new blade pairs don't match.

Having said that, are you sure you got a good first sharpening and the hollow is consistent along the entire blade? If the sharpener rushed, you may just not have a good hollow and have some flatter spots in there. Before you get a radius or anything else, I'd have them sharpened one more time. Believe me, I do this EVERY day for customers who buy skates (models I don't sell) at other shops. They report the same symtoms as you. A sharpening usually corrects it. If not, just get both skates radiused.
