Possible Supination - Outside Edge Issues

Recommended Posts

To start, I have not had my feet evaluated for supination/pronation, but I am planning to do it. Even so, I have a question about possible supination and outside edges.

I was skating in the Vapor series of Bauer skates for years, up until a few years ago when I had my feet evaluated at my LHS. The Bauer analysis said 100% across the board I should be in Supreme skates. I went from 1X to 1S skates and my feet felt much more comfortable. I had one skate punched out a bit due to a toe issue I have. I've had these 1S skates for maybe three years now or so.

I have been skating since I was 13, and at 40 I'm a high-level C player (depending on how my back feels that week, lol). My major achilles heel is my outside edges. I cannot stop on my outside edges to save my life. When I'm walking, I find I sometimes am walking on my outside edges, with my ankles bending outward. When I do one-foot slalom drills, I get very uneasy on my outside edge, feeling like I am going to tip over. It's just a very uncomfortable feeling, so it's affecting my agility, since we know the outside edge of the inner foot really helps drive a sharp turn.

I am trying to decide if I am in the wrong skates, or if there is something that can be done to my current skates to alleviate this problem. I am thin and have a thin foot with a moderately high arch. Would a different type of skate compared to the Bauer 1S possibly be a solution? Or is this likely a foot problem and not an equipment problem per se? Looking to get pointed in the right direction here so I can get my confidence back on the outside edges.

Look at the bottom of a pair of shoes you wear often and you will be able to easily see if you pronate or supinate. To me, it sounds like you supinate.

I’m just going to use this thread bc I can’t find the other one.

Long story short, I went down a holder size and now my outside edge is sliding underneath me during crossovers.  I recently just had them profiled to 11ft from 10ft hoping that would help.  I don’t feel any difference.  I’m a much much better skater than I used to be (I’m now in my 40’s), but now I’m having trouble with a basic crossover that is one thing I’ve never had issues with in my life.  I’m contemplating a holder swap back to the 263 I’ve skated in my whole life.  Could going to a 12 really make a difference?

I have outside edge issues, a guy I played with watched me skate, and he said I was to far forward on my toes, he said, put your weight into your heels (now I know you have to be in the seated toilet position and I thought I was) however just that simple way of saying where to put my weight clicked, followed by some simple outside edge drills has worked wonders, I feel more balanced. So it could be something as simple as that. I have a pair of old Nike Cortez, and they are very worn away on the outside of the heel area.

That might not be a big enough difference in profile.  I've got small feet, but with the True TF9s, even smaller than I'm used to runners.  The standard 9/10 profile made me feel very unstable.  Reached out to Binnie's in Pittsburgh and he suggested a ProSharp Zuperior Small (6'/12'/20') for my 238mm blades.  It's made a huge difference.  Way more steel on the ice gives me way more confidence I can grip and hold an edge.

Thanks for the response.  I had mine done by Noicing sports so I feel pretty confident they were done right.  I’m not too educated on the fancy profiles, but maybe that will be my next step

Not doubting they were done correctly.  Theorizing that moving down a holder size and only adjusting the profile up 1 foot radius may not be a big enough change to equal out the reduction in holder size.  Find a knowledgeable person/shop to talk this through with.  I ended up with Binnie - as he offers "free consultation" that I found helpful and wanted to give him my business as part of that, but I'm sure there are plenty of other folks out there that can advise on highly technical matters like this.

I’ve purchased steel from them

in the past.  They are in my mind as one of the more reputable places out there

Adding to this.  Has anyone ever had Binnie’s do a holder swap for them?  I was looking into sharp Shak but figured it would be easier to just purchase everything from Binnies.  I just don’t really see any of their prior work advertised anywhere

When he was working at a different shop before he had his own thing, he put inline chasis on a pair of ice skates for me, so essentially a holder swap. It’s been 12 or so years and I barely use them, but he did a good job. In all of my experiences with him, both mailing steel and in person, he has really good attention to detail, so I’d personally trust him.
