Bauer Scanner and Profile Recommendations

Recommended Posts

I have had my son on 9’/10’ basically since he started based on the info that was posted here many years ago based on the research available at that time.  Just watched the ProSharp presentation on the Coaches Site again and they mentioned documentation they had available to help choose profiling but since Bauer bought them it seems they transitioned to the scanner for recommendations.

I am thinking of getting a second set of cheaper steel and doing a little experimenting with him.  I still don’t want to waste steel and money.  Does anyone have enough data to correlate the recommendations with successfully matching a profile?

Otherwise I will choose my own starting point.

Our local shop is just so so but they do have a try-3 profile option for those with Bauer or CCM holders. I did it and ended up with some very strong opinions about the different options. Something like that might be good, if it's available in your area.

Overall, as usual, profile is 100% personal preference. While 9'/10' might be quite popular and effective for a lot of players, for me, I personally hated it. I felt twice as good on the same Catalyst 7s after switching their profile from the stock 9/10 to Ellipse II.

I suspect an individual's profile search is akin to finding 3D local maxima. 9/10 might just be optimal for your son. But it might also be a completely different paradigm suits him better.

Is there any scientific research or data on profiles or does it just depend on how a player feels on different profiles? Maybe a player can feel better on one profile but end up performing better by getting used to another. How can a player's performance be measured on specific profiles? Without real objective data, I'm really hesitant to go down the profile rabbit hole. But I'd be really interested in any scientific evidence/data/ research on this topic.

There is some research but not much.  Years back someone here linked to some and at that time 9/10 showed the best performance.

input him on 9/10 based on that as well as, regardless of the profile, he will have consistency.  Just thinking it might be worth playing around with a second set.

BTW, the scanner just spits out a category.  It just said Quad so I assume that IT implies you should match to the skate size.  Not that helpful, that would have been our first experiment anyway.

And it would seem ProSharp has data they used to make recommendations to pros but still seems like some experimentation and collaboration at the end of the day.
