Graf Skates better suited for forwards?

Recommended Posts

Hey all, well i was talking to one of my teammates about getting new skates and he told me that the saleperson told him that grafs are made for forwards and bauers are a premier defense skate id like to have this cleared up before i go out and buy new skates. Thanks.

ive seen forwards wear bauers (XXs, XXXs, 8090s, etc), defensemen wear grafs.. and the other way around. id say it really doesnt matter what position you play, just skate it what you like and what fits...

Maybe he was talking about Graf's forward pitch? I've heard people say that with Bauers, the Vapor line is for forwards, and the Supremes are for defenseman, but I don't entirely buy that. Like sniper said, its all about what works for your specific foot.

thanks, i thought that talking to you guys first would be my best bet because i know that most people on modsquad know alot more about hockey equipment than a sales-person around here would.

Well, although it's all personal preference, the fact one of the first north american "names" to wear Graf was Brian Leetch sorta debunks that.

i just finished off a pair of 503 grafs, and moved to vapor xx. i can tell that vapor has a nuetral pitch, maybe its just me but thats what it seems like, i was actually thinking about getting the tuuks re rockered and adding forwards pitch if thats possible. I loved my grafs except the boot was real flimsy.

I just switched from nike skates to grafs and when i bought them the salesperson asked if i was a forward because he said the forward pitch keeps you on your toes more than other skates and they will be easier to skate in for a forward than a d man. I dont know how much of a difference it makes but i could notice a difference from going from nike quest 1s to graf G9s

I hate that line. Why does it make it easier for forwards rather than D? The position you play doesn't command you skate a certain way, and when you skate backwards you shouldn't be on your heels.

The theory is bunk because you can alter any blade to whatever your preferences are. That being said, Graf skates out of the box have more of a forward pitch than most.

Maybe that was what the sales person was referring to, my friends not the best listener so his information is sometimes somewhat scrambled.

A forward pitch improves forward skating, but may detract from backward skating, that's why a neutral pitch is better for most D's. There are always exceptions, it depends on the skater.

If you do this test, stand on your heels and try to bend your knees, you can't. When you are on your toes, knees bend more naturally. A good knee bend and forward lean puts you in the proper skating stance and allows for better forward skating. Puting a forward pitch on the skate also moves the shoulders forward a couple of inches and puts them over the puck... for a better shooting and passing stance. You can skate OK on a neutral pitch, but you will skate much better with a forward pitch. Grafs have the pitch built into the skate, not the steel. This is the reason so many players say they skate better with Grafs. In reality, it's not the "skate", it's the pitch that did it. Anyone can have pitch adjusted on any skate.
