All Lightweight/Unobstructive Protective Equipment

Recommended Posts

Trying to get the opinions of those on this fine board to get some new lightweight gear. My current stuff is very protective but bulky, heavy, and somewhat uncomfortable -- trying to work on that.

The criteria here is for equipment that is comfortable to wear and get in your way the least when playing.

My current thoughts are:

Gloves -- Sande Max720

Elbows -- Nike V-10

Shoulders -- Itech SP50

Shins -- ???

Pants -- Bauver MBP 8 Girdle

Opinions?

Note -- no idea on helmets, the only helmet that fits me is the Bauer 4000XL so I've never tried anything else.

Shins are hard to say cuz the lighter ones I've worn are old crappy ones.

V10 shins are nice and lightweight.

I thought they were a bit heavy. The new RBK helmet is virtually weightless.

Take a look at the Hespeller x-lite shinpads on some hockey website, very lightweight and not bulky at all.

Even at 16"?

I'm actually more like a 15", maybe even 14, but it seems like they aren't really available online so much. I'll check my LHS tomorrow to see if they carry it.

I guess they seem light to me because I use CCM 852s and they are really bulky and heavy.

Great thread, since I play in a beer league I don't really need all the latest and greatest stuff with maximum protection.

I've been using 852s for a year and a half

I don't know if I would skimp on shin pads, in my beer league there are still some guys who can crank some slappers and I'd rather they didn't meet my shins in anger. I've got some Itech's and they seem pretty good, not too heavy and they offer decent protection. Also the Mission HE750(?) MSH gloves are super light.

The Sher-Wood Classic Shoulder pads would be the best for lightweight, I think.

I think DR has some classic ones coming out soon too.

I was also going to add that our Beer league has some guys who...really shoot.

shins and Elbows and gloves are non-debateable items I will spend extra for...

well, I guess pants, sticks and helmet too...lol

definately shins and elbows tho.

Currently not wearing shoulders

You gotta protect the stones too so add the cup to the nondebateables ;)

We've got a lot of guys who don't wear shoulders but everynow and then they'll meet some thug who just cross checks the hell out of them, but if its rare enough I can see skipping them.

Try the Bauer 6000 shins, I have the 8000's and they are pretty light and mobile, and the 6000's are a little lighter and still have good protection

You have the same girdle as I do, cant beat it for mens league as its light has pretty good protection (except for inner thigh)

I would suggest if your looking for a light glove with good protection, I would try to find a pro nylon type glove w/plastic inserts

as far as elbows go, havent tried the nike's but I have the bauer 8000's and they fit great and are pretty light too, I am a little partial to the fit of these as I had the vapor 4's which is almost the same exact style..

Get what you like, thats always been my philosophy!

As far as shins go, I can say that the TPS Contours are nice. I bought a pair about a year ago and have been very happy. The price is right and I have taken many hard shots off them with no ill effects. They are pretty wide at the bottom which makes them excellent if you wear your shins over your skates (I do).

That's my only complaint about the Bauer 8000 pant. Very little inner thigh protection.
