Bad sharpening from Hockey Giant

Recommended Posts

I ordered a pair of Mission S400's and told them to go ahead & sharpen them. Here's the results  I called & asked for a refund and they agreed with no problem, but still...

Very nice.

You get what you pay for when you buy online...you think they care if the sharpening is square and smooth? Of course not - they slap and go and throw them in the box and ship to you...

Funny thing is I figured I'd let them do it 'cause you never know what you're gonna get from the local rink. This is far worse than anything I've gotten done locally.

I love it that they offer a "deluxe" sharpening...I guess that means they spend two minutes on a skate as opposed to one...

Deluxe LOL

I'm gonna skate on 'em tonight & see how it goes but I'm taking my old skates with me just in case. I'll get 'em redone down in Reston this weekend while we have the kids there for the CBHL playoffs.

I've never heard of someone sending their skates anywhere just for a sharpening.

Hockey Giant is my LHS, and the sharpenings are consistently brutal. There is one guy that does a decent job, but it is usually someone you can tell doesn't have a clue what they are doing. Last sharpening got done from them was horrible, set a penny on the steel and it would tilt at probably a 20-30 degree angle. I can completely understand sending steel somewhere to be sharpened when there isn't anyone localy to do a decent job.

It takes about 20-30 minutes to do the first sharpening CORRECTLY. The mail order and internet shops are not going to spend that amount of time on your skates. It's just a fact. They want your quick money and don't care about you after that. Also, many LHS's are the same. When it copmes to sharpening, you have to choose your shop wisely.

BTW, I love that pic of your skates. I can see the "waves" very easily.

I wouldn't exactly call them "waves"...looks like the wheel was skipping...you know what I'm talking about...it makes that nice sound when you make a pass...

Total hack job.

And MINT - I agree with Jimmy. It takes me 15 minutes to sharpen a pair that has a hollow. It takes longer to sharpen a new pair.

Actually, the NHL eq mgrs use Maximum Edge, which is what I learned (but did not pay for.) I am now using their holder and it is cutting my time down significantly. You have to factor in nicks, bent blades, previous hack jobs, dressing the wheel, BSing with customers, packing a lip...

i learnt maximum edge as well years ago... guess i use a variety of the two trainings at certain times. lol. but ya i get what youre saying man.... interesting perspectives we all have. i think we should all get togther n make our own shop! lol

What? I am not saying you're a bad sharpener at all...where did that come from?

I was just stating a fact that the NHL eq mgrs use M-E. They sponsor SPHEM and I worked a training camp with Nashville.

I do not swear by M-E. I have also added things to the method that they use.

This has nothing to do with me. I do more passes than most people, I just happen to take longer. Nobody has complained.

So is it safe to assume that with the deluxe sharpening you get a dressed wheel, the surface half way brushed off, and one edge included?
