New Equipment for older guy

Recommended Posts

Speaking of lack of protection how about Holmstrom's getup. A lot of the older guys seem to wear the older style, minimal protection, shoulder pads since that's what they grew up wearing. Last I heard Shanahan was wearing the same ones he's had since before he entered the NHL.

Shanny and chelios both wear these ancient coopers shoulders. I remember reading an interview with the equipment guy and he was talking about how it would have been easier to buy a new set but since they had them since junior they feel they are good luck or something. Shanny doesn't even wear a cup, so following the advice of the pros isn't always what's best for us.

also I play in a non-contact league and there's a lot of contact, either from players not being able to stop and hitting the boards and other players to guys using their sticks to stop. and every now and then you're league will have some one who can really shoot. So while you are not getting checked there is still a good deal of contact, at least in my league and even in the higher levels the refs will let a certain amount of contact "slide".

Until last Wednesday I too was thinking of ditching my 452 shoulder pads and getting the Sher-wood 5030 Traditions but I cracked a rib during a non-contact game when I came into contact with cross check. It was unintentional but it still hurts like hell.

I was finding the CCM 452's to be too bulky and I was looking for something similar to what I wore when I was young (I'm 41 btw).

Is there such a thing as a light weight, non-restrictive shoulder pad that has good protection?

Nikes... I use the V-10 and it's light, not restrictive...

Or check out the Bauer Lightspeed 8k.

Since all of the RBK equipment is coming out, I have been able to get amazing deals on JOFA gear. For the money, IMO it is the best you can get. It is a little bulky, however since I am 6'5" and 280lbs. it doesn't really effect me too much.

Good idea, but I'm 5'5", 150 lbs - shortest guy in both leagues I play in.

Rustyhole, if I was 33 I would agree that I would not be old but at 39, the body doesn't recover that quickly. I consider myself in very good shape but when you go back out on the ice after so many years, certain muscles hurt more than I remember. Thanks all for the suggestions. :)
