Need suggestions for adding protection to a glove

Recommended Posts

So I cut tip of my index finger off yesterday with a utility while working on my house. They couldn't stitch the piece back on so I have pretty big hunk missing from my finger.

I have 2 playoff games this week (one tonight) and since I'm a hockey player, I can't let a missing finger keep me out of the games so I have to find a way to keep it some what safe.

It's my lower hand so I need to protect it from slashes and pucks as well as from killing me while I grip the stick.

My plan was to modify an old glove. I was going to put a layer of foam on the palm of the finger to help absorb some of the shock from the stick. I was then going to tape a plastic insert on the side of the finger and one on the top.

Now I know no mater what I put there, if I get hit by anything I will end up crying like a little girl. I just want to try to minimize the chance of getting hit the best I can.

Any thoughts on my plan or suggestions on making it better?

I know. :(

My wife's mom is a dentist and she gave me a box of latex gloves so I'm going to wear one over the bandages to protect it from my glove and everything that lives there.

Is it possible to stitch poly inserts into the glove yourself? You can easily get ahold of sheet styrene or plastic and cut it to fit the finger pieces, the hard part would be cutting up your gloves and adding them. I'm thinking you'd need to also buy nylon or leather because if you cut it up, I think you'll need new fabric.

It's probably possible but I know I couldn't do it myself. I really don't want to cut up the gloves anyway, I was hoping to just tape everything on really well with electrical tape or something.

I would tape two fingers together for support in case it gets hit. I would also put a little bacitracin in there so anything crawling around will keep away.

I do not know how tender the thing is, but there are all sorts of ways to seal off the finger. There is a plastic liquid bandage that might help, it dries on your finger. But last time I tried one it hurt like hell!

It's still really tender, it hurt like hell cleaning it this morning so I can't really put anything on it.

I will try taping it to another finger though.

try some NU SKIN, I've gotten some pretty big gashes on my hands and arms and put that on. You can get it at most drugstores. It works really good. Its antibacterial too. I'm no professional but I would give NU SKIN a shot

The only thing I could think of would be a metal splint for broken fingers. Maybe if you could jam one in the finger sideways it would deflect some of the impact. Obviously, padding and other things would still be required.

I ended up not being able to play due to family obligations. :(

I tried on my glove when I got home and it looks like I won't need to add any protection to it. My finger sits in there just right so the cut off part isn't in an unprotected area. I have a game Thursday so I will try it out and see what happens.

Thanks for the help everyone.
