OHL draft

Recommended Posts

The Patrice Cormier kid did well to make Jr. A as a 15 year old. I think he just grew faster than most kids and had a little skill to go along with it. He'll have a half decent junior career.

is there a max. age to be drafted in the O? im not worried about the draft lol, just me and one of my buddies who played in the O got into a drunk debate and he said sometimes if there is an unclaimed 17-18-19 year old blue chipper out there they will use a late round pick to lock the kid up, anyone else heard of this? i know mike vanryn went to the sting after u ofm, but i think he was drafted prior to college, thanks

Teams will usually not draft you if they know you're planning on going to college. Or, they will use a late round pick, if you're a very high end prospect. You cannot sign with a team in the O, then go play NCAA. You could however go from the NCAA to the O.

You have a total of 4 years of draft eligibility (ex. this year is the 89 draft year, so previously undrafted players born in 88, 87 and 86 are still eligible this year.)

thanks eric. im pretty familiar with the system and politics. some of its just a shame though. my buddy(s) played for 4 and 5 years around the league as american suitcases, its a shame because they were heavily recruited and wouldve been awesome college players, one of them is in the CIS now and the other going to school full time kessel and gerbe were both highly touted OHL prospects with a bright college future, smart boys. i just dont see the big deal about the tier 1 major jr, its not like you make a salary, you just get free stuff. id like to see the NCAA rethink their policy to prevent putting a premature end to someones career. thats nice 87s can go this year and next, i know a blue chipper

Tavares will go #1 no doubt in my mind. My opinion is biased since I played against him for 3 years but he is absolutely amazing. His skillset at almost the same age as me is just unreal. Most people who get passed over in the draft as 88 's, 87's, etc will go later rounds because they are not worth the high pick, since they aren't in high demand. This is the same as in the NHL draft. In the Dub, you get drafted usually when you are 15 if you are born before June, and 14 if you are after the draft is done, aka your 2nd year of Bantam. It's not too young because all kinds of players get exposure out here, there are scouts at every game and it is not like knowledge of the players game is unheard of. Summer and Winter hockey, showcases, AB cup, and tourney's are all around to help you get seen.

Kevin Cormier, he's a fighter that's why he got drafted. Look at his stats in Jr. A and their not impressive other than his PIM. Talent wise and can't see him being that great.

Just an update, they are allowing this Travares kid enter the draft. I still have mixed feelings on this and don't really understand why he didn't play Tier II all year long, but we'll see how this turns out. I believe, for this to be the "right decision" he'll need to put up close to 1 ppg easily in his first year. Otherwise, I don't see why he was allowed to be an early entry.

I think all of the drafting ages are too young. They should push the OHL draft back to 16, and the NHL back to at least 20.

i agree with that id like to see it later so that teams could see how a players matures

sorry to argue an old post but you do get paid in the O, removing your amateur status killing NCAA eligibility

JR, my buddy tells me he is worth a top 10 pick. Definetely needs some filling out, but from what I have seen of him he's a solid player.

OHL announces decision regarding John Tavares

Created: May 4, 2005

The Regional Evaluation Panel established by the Ontario Hockey League today announced its results of its review and consideration of the application by John Tavares to be granted “exceptional player†status and thus be eligible for the OHL Priority Selection Process on Saturday, May 7th, 2005.

The Regional Evaluation Panel was an arm’s length committee struck by the OHL.

The Regional Evaluation Panel was comprised of Mr. Kevin Burkett, a respected labour arbitrator / mediator and long-time Minor and Tier 2 Junior A hockey coach; Mr. Frank Bonello, former Minor and Junior hockey coach and manager and current Director of Central Scouting for the National Hockey League; and retired National Hockey League player and current Minor hockey coach and parent, Mr. Doug Gilmour.

The panel had full and binding authority to determine the status of player John Tavares.

In making their judgment the Regional Evaluation Panel made the following statement…

“We have been constituted and have the authority to decide if John Tavares is, within the guidelines established by the Ontario Hockey League, an “exceptional†15 year old hockey player eligible to play within the Ontario Hockey League for the 2005-06 season.

We are mindful of not only the athletic challenges but also the emotional and academic challenges that would occur should a 15 year old be permitted to play in the Ontario Hockey League.

Having considered the report of Mr. Paul Dennis, Phd., a sports psychologist, who interviewed John Tavares to determine if he possesses the necessary life skills to qualify as an “exceptional player†and having interviewed Mr. Dennis; having considered both the completed teacher questionnaire and hockey coach questionnaire and having interviewed his coach, Mr. James Naylor; having considered the player evaluation report filed by Mr. Robert Kitamura, Chief Scout, OHL Central Scouting and having interviewed Mr. Kitamura; having considered the academic and hockey documentation and the essay submitted by John Tavares in support of his application and having interviewed John Tavares and his mother, we unanimously conclude, - subject to the agreement in writing of the team that selects John Tavares that during his first year of play the League must concur with all billeting arrangements and will monitor John Tavares’ social and educational development and may initiate any remedial response that it considers appropriate – that John Tavares is an “exceptional†15 year old hockey player who possesses the maturity and strength of character to play in the Ontario Hockey League for the 2005-06 season.â€

That's just gross how good he is.
