Im sure that the context in which Ben Franklin spoke those words was slightly different to the circumstances you are applying them to. I am also sure that he would rephrase that sentence after 2000 people lost their lives on 9/11.

I think the things they are doing are not providing any real security. Our government has done so much to erode personal freedoms after the terrorist incidents four years ago that airline searches barely registers.

They don't search every bag, nor do they search every person well enough to prevent a determined person from bringing a weapon on the plane. It's the illusion of safety that makes most people happy.

It is probably unlikely that anyone is going to want to steal your old smelly hockey stuff. It is VERY likely it will get lost along the way. The airlines are pretty good about trying to find the owner of lost stuff. So you want to be sure to put a piece of paper INSIDE of the hockey bag stating where you are visiting, how long you will be there, and a local phone number (hotel, hocikey rink,etc), and also where your home address is. If they can find you, they will send your stuff out with a courier.

For the people that was flown with sticks, what tips can you give me. I think there was another thread on this but I couldnt find it. I remember someone mentioning about getting a bag from the airline that they use to carry skis and stuff.

You will probably have to pay an oversize bag fee. Mail them home if you can.

definately put them in a stick bag, or in a large bag that they should have at the check in counters. i didnt put one of mine in a stick bag, and the stickers they used on it were extremely hard to get off!

if they treat it like golf clubs..

most airlines will not cover any damages to golf clubs unless it is in a hardcase. and they will only cover up to $500* if lost, a similar policy may apply to sticks..

*depending on the airline

mailing them is probably a better option.. especially if you have to pay an oversize fee... fedex ground should get it home for a resonable fee, and you can insure it.

Knock on wood, I haven't had any problems checking sticks in that were about 20+ in count and in team bags. For a couple, I've been able to just carry them in a smaller stick bag and they'll check it in at the gate.

By the by, when using UPS make sure you use a very rigid or sturdy box. Unless you want a broken stick. A few months ago, I seen a golf club, bent in half, come down the line with its original box ripped open behind it. Either way its gonna have hundereds of pounds of boxes on top of it, theres no win win situation.

That info should be listed on the airline website, it is different for every airline. Kinko's will hammer you on the price.

I think alot of people opt to send their luggage UPS. I see atleast 2-3 normal clothing bags being sent. Seriously though, if you're sending sticks consider getting a gun case or something. Cardboard will do nothing to protect the stick, if its a shaft send it in a tube, they usually end up on the top of box walls or behind so theres not a whole lot of damage potential.

Yeah, i shipped a stealth once one a plane but i definetly but it in a box and bubble rapped it like a mother.. so that nothing would happen even tho im sureee they took and it out and messed around.. soo meh it came out in one piece so i was happy

I flew United to Hawaii in January, I used one sea bag and my hockey bag for my check bags. With a hockey bag United allows 2 sticks (No fee). I just wrapped them in plastic. Otherwise their oversized bag fee is 80$.

The sticks came through fine, my bag got a little stove up, but no big deal - after all, its a hockey bag, it already smells like death.

I just found that Air canada and FedEx have some sort of baggage program, and they give discounted prices, it looks like that will be my best bet, although Ill have to buy bubble wrap and such there. Hopefully I get a good deal and shipping isnt too much or I might have to chance taking them on the plane.

Two of my friends who played for the New Brunswick team for Canada Games there whole team lost their gear on the ride home and they had to start their playoffs liek two days later luckily the ones i know got there gear before there playoffs started not sure about the other and also they still havent found one of my buddies 2 ops.

just had a thought. Some people said the airline guys messed with your stick, and it was all scratched up. If you were traveling with two sticks, you could tape them together, and maybe they wouldn't screw around with them, because two together would be kind of awkward. Maybe I'm wrong, but when I fly home from study abroad (I have all my hockey stuff here, started playing here), I plan on taking a stick or two home with me. Hopefully my stuff will make it alright
