Why do my blades always break in the same place?

Recommended Posts

In the last two years I have broken the blades on 2 TPS responses (reg yellow), a Response Rubber, and a Innovative True One. ALL have been at the front edge of the toe. As in the front and back side of the blades separate at the toe. Bad luck or am I doing something in particular?

do you bang the toe of your stick on the ice much??? the lie of your stick could be wrong and you are hitting the toe at impact of shots! your stick could be too short causing the same problem!

appologize since i don't have an answer to your question, but id say that you have to change the place where the pucks comes off your blade in order reduce breakage at that particular spot. mabye that means switching different lie/curve/shot.

I take lots of slapers in warm-ups, but never in a game. Wristers are my favorite. I have used a 4 1/2 or 5 lie for some time now. I get nice even tape wear across the whole blade so I don't think it's the lie. Coincidence?????? Who knows.....

a) don't shoot slappers in warmups... I don't care what the rest of the team does, but why bother taking them if you're not going to take them in the game, you gotta warm up your shooting to :) - I take almost exclusively snap shots and wristers and I never use slap shots in warm ups.

B) What broke? Was it a horizontal break? Or was it rather a vertical or diagonal break. Because the inno could have a different reason of breaking than the louisville sticks did.

It's right along the front edge. The front and back separate.

If you are referring to the toe of the blade splitting and fraying, I think that this is caused by repeated impacts to the toe from digging in the corners and crashing the boards. The best way to avoid this I've found is to tape the entire blade right over the toe and then cut the excess tape off so that the toe is covered. I've been doing this for a while now and I actually like it better anyway. I find that I have better grip and feel for doing toe drags. Just remember to keep a pair of scissors in your bag or tape your sticks at home. Good luck.

Jason,

Thanks, I may try the tape thing if I can get it to not effect my shot.

As for the question about hitting the toe on the ice alot....no, I am kind of fond of the stick when I pay $100+ on it and usually make some half ass attempt to take care of it. I do dig in the corners my fair share and that's probably where I will have to either change my style or go back to shafts w/ wooden blades.

As long as you are meticulous when taping and cutting, then you won't have any problems and may end up liking it better. I keep taping the tape as if the blade weren't rounded, but square right over the toe and then I pinch it together all the way along the edge of the rounded toe, then I use scissors and cut as tight to the toe as possible and it ends up beautiful everytime.

i got that problem a lot with my inno, but i got some "carbon fiber sealer" from a friend of mine, it's basically superglue for carbon fiber. i just put a little on the toe, where it was chipping and fraying and the glue has kept it together really well. also, the glue is really tough, and hasn't really worn down, so give it a try, i think you should be able to find it in most hobby stores. supposedly, it's used to build high end RC cars with carbon fiber chassis
