Roller hockey or Ice hockey

Recommended Posts

i think it's a pretty universal opinion that ice-hockey is better then rollerhockey in every single respect. To play or to watch. The thing is roller hockey is a lot easier/cheaper to get into and it is the best substitute for ice hockey.

Couldn't disagree with you more Borsch. Saying one is better than the other is an apples to oranges thing. Roller is more wide open and more constant movement, having one less skater on the same sized surface along with no icing or off-sides. Ice on the other hand has the longer reputation and big hits. I personally prefer Roller because I basically grew up in the roller rinks here, and it's much more accessible where I'm at.

I stand by my opinion :)

Especialy after I've watched the NARCH finals on the nhl.com. Those were the best roller players but the skating still looked "wooden" and everything - the skill, the dynamics, the control had looked (far) inferior to decent level ice hockey.

I'm not trying to dice roller - it's good and I personaly enjoy it loads, but lets not kid anyone here - ice hockey is THE game. Hitting or no hitting - the skating (inside/ outside edge control, grip, slides, stops. Great skating means one cannot just stand behind the net for MINUTES like in the NARCH games - people skate and maneuver harder), stickhadling and passing (less friction = faster, the heavier puck feels better)... the game is much more dynamic and skilled.

But roller hockey is a great alternative - cheaper and more easily available.

Um, no those weren't the best inline players. NARCH does have a pro division the has fielded many past and future NHL stars. I'll agree that ice is much faster moving than what NARCH represented themselves as there, but they discounted an entire PRO division. Again though, it's an apples to oranges debate as far as which one is better. It also comes down to one hand feeding another as well. Guys like Brett Sterling from CC have made huge names in junior platinum for NARCH, and low and behold, he's a top scorer in NCAA Div1 ice, despite being a small player.

I really prefer Ice! I am not the best skater on wheels, there just seem to be more you can do on ice with your feet. But Roller is where I started, so there is still a place for it with me. But I exclusively play Ice now.

They are both fun for me. I look at ice as being a more serious game then roller, I do like the hitting and the faster game in ice, but I also like the no offsides and icing in roller. Ice is better all around, but Roller does beat ice in the price department.

The thing about ice I l like better is the skating (as mentioned before; edge control, speed, stops, pivots). I personally cannot do the things on wheels that I can do on a piece of curved steel.

But! My wallet loves roller compared to ice.

Also, I like the openness of 4 on 4, no icing/offsides...........it always feels like a pick up game compared to ice.

But I play ice exclusively now for the speed and skating.

I'm going with Borsch with this one. Even though roller is fun/cheap it is no where near the intensity of ice. With the hitting and speed alone, it attracts more people to it than roller. Roller is fun in the summer but ice is the real thing.

I've been playing roller all of my life, and there isn't really anything about ice that makes me want to start playing.

are u f-ing joking sdcopp?

hockey is done on skates, not wheels. in a sports wher ei can have better bearings than you and be faster is rediculous. The game was made for ice, i dont even associate roller hokcey with ice, it is so inferior.

i only played roller int he past with my buddies. tried competitive it is so bad. the pace is terrible compared to ice.

lets not get into intensity cuz we know who wins that

Well chief, obviously hockey CAN be played on wheels (thus the name of the sport being roller/inline hockey).

And I'll have to disagree on the whole "bearings making you faster" issue. Some schmuck with top of the line bearings who has poor skating technique is not going to be as fast or agile as a skilled skater who is skating on rusted out ABEC 1 bearings. As far as equipment goes between the two sports I'd equate freshly sharpened skates with new wheels. You can tell when your blades are dull just like you can tell when your wheels are trashed out.

It's really all a matter of opinion. Neither is inferior to the other. They are obviously similar sports with differences that appeal (or "un-appeal") to people. I've played both and I decided to develop my roller game for several reasons, one being that I prefer the 4-on-4 strategies of roller. I would never knock ice hockey, because there's no doubt that it's the "bigger brother", but if I never stepped out onto ice again, I wouldn't complain.

However most people would agree that lower levels of roller hockey are hell to watch as are lower levels of ice hockey. The same goes with the upper levels of both sports as well (being more enjoyable).

It's funny that you should call inline inferior. Ice has the physicality on it's side, that's very true, but a majority of the best young players coming out of schools like CC, DU, U of M, etc. are crossover players. Ice focuses on the checking, positioning, etc, whereas roller focuses on touching the puck, finesse portion of the game. The reason so many people look at inline as inferior to ice is because ice hockey is several hundreds of years older as a sport. The same faulty argument can be made between NFL type football and arena football. Of course the one that is more established will automatically have the higher fan count, etc. The problem with that view is you're trying to make an apples to apples comparison, when it's really an apples to oranges comparison. Take a good look at five to ten yrs ago, which type of players were making the big names for themselves in ice to now. Today's top scorers in college this season alone were little guys. 5'8", 5'9" 170-190 would've been small five yrs ago, but the top players this yr in NCAA div1 were all in this size range.
