THE STANLEY CUP: coming to a beer league near you?

Recommended Posts

Heh.... that would be funny. Winning bidder gets to have cup awarded in their league.....

What about having the cup awarded at the world cup/olympics/international competition?

Or, the AHL?

Or, that WPHL competition this summer?

etc. There's got to be a good place to award it. I would think some sort of international competition would be the way to go.

These guys have been milking this all year trying to get as much attention as they can. It's just a publicity stunt for them to get their 15 minutes of fame.

Post the link next time. You have to have the permission of the author or owner to post a story.

Did you hear that from the article he posted?

One suggestion is a tournament featuring the University Cup champion Alberta Golden Bears and the yet to be determined Memorial Cup and Allan Cup champs, but the group isn't pushing a specific plan.

Personally I would only award the Stanley Cup in the NHL. Kids grow up dreaming of being in the Stanley Cup final, Game 7 in overtime and scoring the game winning goal to hoist the cup for a victory lap around the ice. I just don't see the Stanley Cup being offered as a prize at lower levels of hockey. But I guess this proposal could really go both ways. It will be more meaningful for guys to play for the desire of cup rings on their fingers again instead of playing more for the money.

If the London Knights, _____ team from the Q, _____ team from the O, _____ team from the Dub, played the Horse Lake Thunder, or the team from Lloydminster, or U of A, they would pretty much kill them.

Besides, when those guys win their respective championships they win their own trophies. I honestly don't understand why they would even bring up this idea..

When the OHL wins their championship they get a trophy too. Same with the NHL and their Confrence championships, so I don't see that argument serving any purpose. I do agree that the University teams would get eaten, even the NCAA teams, but if they are going to give the Cup out I think it should be either there, or a a world tourney much like the March Madness and it could be of all levels and teams would have to ask for invites. That way everyone who is there, expects to compete.

If they want to go back to the original setup, the teams would have to challenge Tampa for it.

UofA wouldn't be killed by a CHL team, their basically guys fromt the WHL that we're a step short of making it to the NHL. CIS is underrated. And why would it be just Canadian teams? Why not get the European team's involved....

Your right, most of the U teams are composed of Ex-Major junior players, but they are guys who couldn't step it up to the next level. Your looking at the bottom to middle tier players making up the roster for a university squad. Terrific hockey, but not on the same level as Major junior, not at the level on London and the likes at least.

American D-1 teams would not get killed by CHL teams.

For the most part, when it comes to the upper echelon D-1 teams, most of the guys who commit to D-1 schools were, at some time, drafted into the CHL. They would be close games.

guelph university(they arent even good, three of my buddies played for them) plays guelph storm every now and then, and they are usually really close games. youd be suprised the difference age makes. in major junior you have like 16-20 yr olds, in cis you have guys who are usually(there are exceptions) 20-30. BTW, im all for the allan cup champs getting a chance, giving theo fleury another chance to hoist the cup would be unreal

It'll always be a close game in situations like that. I can't believe Guelph's OHL team would do that, its a no win situation.

#94, I think D-1 is great hockey, infact I have a few friends playing, but they seem to be a step below. I find D-1 hockey, generally, to be a smaller, faster game, but just lacks the star presence. It is rising up very quickly with more and more players opting to go the educational route though. Overall, I can't see them being able to play on a consistant basis with the Major junior teams. In a few years... I could see it, but right now not so much.

player for player major juniors are defintly better. With D-1 and even cis, they are practicing six times a week for every 1 game, which is why i think theyd be able to compete. D-1 hockey is soooo structured, its almost like basketball or football. Factor in the age, and the fact that they perform really well as a team and I think it would be close. One of my buddys who played his entire elig. @ clarkson said that you could put a shitty player in place of a decent one and wouldnt even make a huge difference, aslong as he knew the plays properly

Yes, but my point was that it seems almost like these guys have a warped perception of what the point of going to the show, and winning the Stanley Cup is (which I'm sure isn't correct, but that's what it seems like). Why would you award a lower level team the Stanley Cup, it just doesn't make sense to me.. For example, if my team won a championship, and you gave us the trophy I wouldn't be any more stoked just because it is the Cup, in fact I am sure it would be a joke because what have I done that is extra super special to deserve this? I bet it would seem corny. The guys who are supposed to win it work for their whole lives to get to that stage. It's almost as if they think the players are dissatisfied with the trophies that they win (In lower levels).

As for the teams in the NHL winning their conferences and OHL teams winning their conferences, that is why they have those other trophies. Why would they award the Western conference champs or WHL champs with the Cup?

On a side note, the CIS teams that I know of are filled with lower end WHL players, and high end Jr. players. I am positive of this because you hear so much about these teams around here, its like they are the second coming of Crosby.
