Availability of authentic NHL jerseys

Recommended Posts

Long time lurker with a puzzling question that I have not yet received a legitimate answer to. I've been in search of an authentic white Kings away jersey, but much to my dismay, I have failed to find one. I've looked at shop.nhl.com, teamlastore.com, icejerseys.com, rivercitysports.com and other online hockey retailers and not a single one of them carries any current authentic Kings jerseys. I find it to be quite mysterious, so I'm left wondering if there is some licensing issue or that they are so popular at the time that all of the bandwagoners have snatched them up and they're out of inventory.

Icejerseys.com notified me that they're only licensed to carry authentic uniforms of Canadian teams since they're a Canadian based company (first I've heard of that). I received the obligatory "out of stock" email from shop.nhl.com and teamlastore.com, but I find it hard to believe they'd sell out of authentics and have replicas still available. Anyone have any clue or a suggestion as to where I can find them? Much appreciated!

Depending on what size you're looking for I'd just buy a game worn or a team issued one. The current 7231 "Edge" jerseys are made in Indonesia and aren't anywhere close to 7287 series the players wear on the ice.

It has much more to do than just that.

There is EDGE and there is EDGE 2.0, which is the airknit version.

There are players in the league who use the original version - personal preference there.

The airknit version isn't sold in stores.

The Edge 2.0 (7287) is worn by the majority of NHL players nowadays. The Edmonton Oilers and very small handful of players around the league still wear the 1.0 (7187).

Certain teams do sell the 2.0 Air Knits direct to the public. The Vancouver Canucks are one of them. They don't carry the newer 7231 "authentic" (made in Indonesia aka "Indo-Edge) but do offer the 2.0 as their Authentic in store. Regular retail stores can't order these jerseys from Reebok. You can also find blank team issued 2.0s on Meigray or various jersey collecting forums from time to time.

Wow, I honestly didn't know there were this many differences. I always thought "authentic" were the on-ice version (but with added retail tags, etc) and "premier" were replicas.

I might get a Kings jersey after they win the cup. Definitely need to get one of the new Leafs 3rds too. Boy I wish they'd move to that for their home/away, though the current home/away is the best thing theyve had since the mid 90s.

Edge 1.0:

Made of Xtrafil and Stretch mesh. This material caused sweat to pool in the players' skates and gloves so it quickly became unpopular at the pro level. It was sold at the retail level until the end of last season. Reebok ended up blowing out tons of inventory to retailers. These all have the RBK Vector logo branding.

Indo Edge:

These are the Indo Edge Jerseys that were introduced this year that replaced the Edge 1.0s at the retail level. The quality is not even remotely close to the Canadian made jerseys. Note the bright lime green stripe on the neck line and the lack of any size tags. It's now printed on the green stripe. Newer team stock jerseys may have the green stripe as well but they'll be made of air knit and will have a size tag. I've seen lots of sloppy stitching on these as well.

Edge 2.0:

Made of Air Knit and stretch mesh and it is the only jersey to have double elbows. This is what most players wear now. Edge 2.0 is a pro only option. It's cut to look like the Edge 1.0 but many of the panels are air knit.

As a consumer/collector, I buy an authentic jersey because I want what the players wear on the ice. It's a shame this hasn't been the case in the last couple of years.

Wow really good to know. Can't believe that for 300 dollars you get a jersey that the pros actually do not wear and they make it overseas no less. Well actually I'm not too surprised especially to see it happen from Reebok. At least in the NFL, the pro jerseys by Nike are the same that the pros wear.

Actually, no, they don't. The materials are close but not the same, nor are the jerseys skill-cut.

Sounds like Reebok has created a mess with the alternate variations of authentic NHL jerseys. I would definitely want to stay away from the "authentic" replicas made from Indonesia. It's a shame that they would lie to the consumer by releasing these fake labeled jerseys as authentics.

First off, "lie" and "fake-labeled jerseys" are pretty strong accusations.

Reebok released an uniform system in 2006. While 98% of the NHL may not be wearing the exact spec jersey anymore, they are still marketing it as such.

Irrespective of assembly quality, this is a reversal of what every other league does with their authentic jerseys; Reebok is selling the full-spec stretch fit to consumers, whereas the pros are wanting the wider cut and lack of moisture management.

This makes me nervous because my girlfriend said she was gonna get me a Toews jersey that was authentic... we'll see what she can come up with. Sadly I'm in the group of people that like top of the line stuff and get irritated when I don't get whats advertised. I guess as long as it's not a "replica" I should be happy right?

All of the jerseys I have mentioned, 7187, 7287 and 7321 are all legitimate NHL jerseys.

The definition of "replica" is different from person to person. I refer to a replica as a semi-pro jersey, a licensed NHL jersey designed to look like the on-ice product. Some people define "replica" as a counterfeit, knockoff, or fake jersey.

I don't like the quality of the premier jerseys. Wash them a couple times and the shoulder patches get messed up.

Sometimes gamers are out of reach because of availability or price so Authentics may be the next best thing.

I hate how the put the screen printed twill on the current replicas. Years ago, even the replica jerseys had the tackle twill names and numbers, just with a lesser grade jersey material. Those were great.

Funny that you mention it; I have a ton of authentics. Ever since EDGE was released, I haven't bought a single one since.

But, to clarify the 7321 for $129 is still better deal than a Premier (Replica) at the same price?

Saw them at an online retailer and was going to order...but had some questions about the differences of what they called "Pro" (Indonesia for $129 + Customizing) and "Authentic" (Canada - $299 Lettered).

The 7231 Indo-Edge will be built better than the Premier Replicas. Just keep in mind the players have never worn these type of jerseys despite them being advertised as Authentics now.

Hmm i was thinking about getting a new jersey and was going to get the premiers bc i wanted an avs away and didnt want to spend the $200 extra. but ill look for the 7231s

To be honest i want it to say "Landeskoging" and to wear it to the odd Avs game when they come to NY, and for screwing around during pickup games. an authentic seems like it would be spoiled on that.

RadioGaGa, wat was the retailer you saw the 7231s at?
