  1. Any of you guys ever use Pad Skinz or Pad Wrap? Did a quick photoshop of what my pads would look like if I matched out jerseys.
  2. Thanks for the video OR, I agree with P22, you improved on many things! It was very obvious that you didn't have much support at all. Not only the 2 on 0 and 2 on 1, but there were so many guys wide open at the bottom of the circles and in the slot it wasn't even funny! You had a ton of great saves though man. I know how hard it is to stay motivated to make the next save when it feels like you are the only one giving a crap on your team. It feels like no one else on the team is even trying, meanwhile you are busting your butt! I could be way off here, but it looks like you have a tendency to lean to your right when you are dropping and kicking out your left leg. I noticed that on a few throughout the video, 3:13, 3:20, 3:34, 5:58, 10:22 etc. It looks like mainly when shots are coming to your glove side you kind of scootch to your right a little extra to make it easier to get your glove on it? At 12:14 you were money, nice and squared, and upright to the shooter. Sick breakaway save at 13:38 too! I'm doing a clinic tonight, still need to get me that suction cup mount for my GP!!! Btw, I can't believe the other team is celebrating goals during pickup!!! Not only that, they are taking extra hacks at rebounds that are right at your glove/blocker when on the ice. I'd be pissed! And wow 16 has the audacity to chirp you when he was standing behind the goal line watching the play?!?! Check out his sorry attempt at playing defense, he does a weak attempt at hooking the player, instead of putting his stick on the ice and going for at least a poke check, he does nothing. Look at all your players standing around and watching the play go by them without being on an opponent. Heck, two of your players are side by side watching the other two opponents wide open hacking away. Have you shown them this video? It would be great so they can see how bad they are doing on D. 15:38, where the hell is your team at?!?! Dude, I know it is just pick up, but i was getting infuriated watching how hung out to dry your team leaves you.
  3. OR, my skates are Graf Goaler Elites. Once again I have learned even more from you guys, this thread is the best!!!
  4. Thats a great feeling Badger about feeling good after a session! Glad to hear you are progressing well with the conditioning and position. I did sticktime at Lakewood (my local rink) with my teammate and almost 30 other people today, it was a zoo! The good news is that they had 5 nets out there. 2 of them were reserved at the south end for a goalie lesson and the other was for a couple guys skating out. The third and fourth were positioned at center ice, facing each other, cross ice. My buddy and I chose to focus on working on stuff at one of the side nets. I did take about 15 shots in the main net, but it was too chaotic. Back at the sidenet I had my friend help me with my lateral movement and slides. Id start at tbe top of the crease, he would tap his stick which was my cue to start my movement to the post. I would look in the direction I was going, pivot my lead foot and drop that leg as I pushed with my opposite foot, resulting in a butterfly slide. As I slid be would then shoot the puck from a relatively steep angle, simulating a one-timer. I felt really good doing these since I had worked on them on Monday. This time it felt more natural and I was able to stay up right and well balanced while squeezing my elbows to my body to seal the 7 hole. We went back and forth between waffle board and glove side. After that I helped him out with his wristwrs from in close, and same with his back hand. Tried to simulate rebounds to top of the crease for him to backhand in...he did great. We also worked in one-timers with some other guys but that was too hectic with all that was going on. The ice got chopped up pretty quickly but I was still abke to work on my butterfly pushes and made great progress with those! We ground down some of the cowling on the inside portion of my skates and it gave me better contact with my blade on the ice. Here is a picture of my skate, we ground down those ridges, they were interfering with my ability to push. I know my foot should be more upright when pushing from butterfly, but right now my technique still blows, so grinding them flat was a huge help!
  5. i had the same exact issue, baking did not solve it. i went a half size bigger and it was clearly the right choice for me once i put them on.
  6. One more shot, my Bauer NME8 mask and my Bauer Reactor 6000 c/a.
  7. so....this just happenend! bauer reactor 6000 from goalie monkey on clearance!
  8. I now know what you mean about the lack of flow in Rookie League, it is almost unnatural to have to move soooo slow in that league that it does mess up timing for us. From that video, that looked like a fun level of pick up, didn't look like there were too many ringers that were trying to deke you every other shot.
  9. Very cool OR! Looked like a fun skate for sure, and wow, 80 years old?!?! We have a guy on our rookie team that is 58, I hope I'm still playing at that age..I think! I brought my GoPro to my StickTime on Monday but didn't bring it out on the ice with me. I only have the 3-in-1 tripod for it, one of these days I will bust it out!
  10. Thanks so much psulion22 for all of that information, I will be sure to implement it next game, as I have heard the team we will be playing is better than this last team, I will need every ounce of energy I can get! Here are a few pix from Sunday's game. Opening faceoff Just pulled a rebound back in and covered it, where is the defense?!?! I believe this was after the first period, chatting with my buddy whom was the opposing goalie.
  11. Just got back from StickTime at KHS and Teemu Selanne's son was skating it...he is a natural! I finally had some great instruction in net today and learned lateral butterfly slides to block one timers, learneed how to set up in Reverse VH from the top of the crease to a b-fly slide to the post, also worked on t-pushing to top of the crease, then shuffle across the arc of the crease as the skater changed his position out front with the puck. There was a minor league goalie (everglades) who was skating out and helping us out. He took my ringer virginity and zipped one high and hit me square in the mask...that was a clink to a quick ring that disapated fast. He also got me good in the shoulder, stinger fo'sho. Im getting a new chesty on Wednesday since mine is ancient! Today was a blast as I learned some fundamentals that I can work on from here on out!
  12. Thanks OR. I agree, the goalie on the other team isnt a rookie, he was my roller hockey goalie, and has played a season or two of ice. He told me that most of their team was returning players, so maybe 2nd season? Either way, I will stick with it as long as I can, if it is just too much to take I will see if I can bump up to Copper or Bronze.
  13. Well that was brutal! I must have faced at least 30 shots, gave up one in the 2nd, and two in the third. First goal went 7-hole, felt it go off my left bicep. Second goal I was completely screened on, saw it right as it went through the D's legs and over my left pad. Third goal was blocker side and I was so exhausted at that point that I couldnt get it in front of the shot. Our team only had 10 shots, and was shutout. So about this team, literally 8 of the 10 skaters seriously looked like they have never skated before. My buddy whom is also brand new looked like a super star compared to them. I cant even tell you how many breakaways I stopped, 2 on 0's, men left all alone wide open in the slot. The refs were giving me propps, and said this game would be so out of hand if I wasnt standing on my head. I even had two sprawling saves that I surprised myself with. My buddy joked that it was like keystone cops on ice! Our team was clearly outmatched, meaning the other team had people that knew what they were doing, had hockey sense, and ability. Our team, not so much. People were literally falling down as they tried to play the puck. I finally had to use our timeout halfway through the 3rd when it was only 2-0. I calmly told the team what I was seeing and was asking for help because I was gassed...I almost puked, thats how many shots I was facing. I guess thats what you get when you sign up for Rookie League. I was just hoping that we had more players with more hockey sense, and even margianally better skills (hopefully those will develop). I was also helping them with their positioning on lining up for faceoffs in our zone. The plus side of all this is that I will learn very quickly, I have no choice. Overall I felt strong but my endurance declined fast as the 3rd period wound down. I focused on keeping my stick down and my butt down as well. My stance felt good, I pushed it a bit wider than last time out and that helped with my b-fly. During warmups I actually did some b-fly slides and it was fun! A gal was taking pix at the game tonight from our bench, I will post some when she uploads them. Tomorrow I am doing that StickTime with my goalie buddy whom is going to give me instruction. I will be bringing my GoPro, so I will put together another video and post it here for you guys to give me more feedback.
  14. Any action shots of you guys in net? I have my first Rookie League game today at 4:50.
  15. Thats a drag the CCM didnt work out for you. I was thinking of checking the one.7 chesty from Bauer ad well. it is $50 cheaper, but I wonder how much of a protection factor would I actually notice? I understand that sometimes we have to sacrifice mobilty for protection, or protection for mobility.
  16. my buddy showed me that the bauer reactor 6000 went on sale for $279.00. i tried it on and it wasnt too bad, but felt pretty bulky. it did have a lot of adjustments though. i want to try it on again but will wear a mask to see if my chin gets caught up when looking left and right in a downward motion.
  17. My first Rookie League game is this Sunday, I am excited. I'm sure the ability level of the skaters will be all over the place. Oh well, got to start somewhere. Also, my buddy whom has played goal all his life (and is 10 years younger) is going to give me some on-ice instruction at a StickTime on Monday. I am thinking of bringing the GoPro for that one. Side note, the same guy mentioned above works at Goalie Monkey and said I just missed Ryan Miller by 10 minutes yesterday when I was on my way to the store.
  18. Thats a bummer man. Was there a defensive lapse by your team in the 3rd? Certainly looks like the offensive didn't show up for your team.
  19. Has anyone tried the Nike Combat Compression series?
  20. thanks p22! i dont currently use compression shorts, sounds like they would be a great investment. do the ones you use have the velcro tabs for socks? im currently using the baggy mesh ones from Warrior.
  21. So I am still experiencing a lingering strain type of feeling behind my left knee, kind of at the bottom of my hamstring. I think it could be from overuse of those muscles? I played 3 times in net last week and skated out once. I'm doing my best to rest it up, and am taking this week off from clinics. Anyone else experience this? I don't recall hyper-extending my legs at any points during any of my sessions. The discomfort was at its highest point on Sunday and has slowly declined since then, but it hasn't gone away. I have been stretching every night, and been using a foam roller as well since Sunday. Thoughts?
  22. thanks for the pointers psulion22! all the things you called out about novices and the BF push explains my poor technique when I first tried how to do it! that is exactly the advice i was looking for, proper technique when learning new moves. when i first tried it, i had no idea of what i was doing, but thinking back i had WAY too much weight on the front leg. i will try these again tomorrow night, now that i understand the proper way to do them. OR, regarding the socks. I haven't tried compression pants yet, but honestly the socks I use aren't all that hot at all, they are game-used LA Kings away socks, not sure the maker, but they breathe very well. I also like them due to the fact (like you mentioned) they keep the knee guards in place, not only that, they protect the insider liner of my pants so the velcro tabs won't tear them up. And yes, this thread is a God'send. I'm very happy you made it, I love coming here and seeing the new replies from fellow new goalies and the veterans who have been so helpful!
  23. Speaking of knee guards, my buddy at GM recommended these to me and I have been using them since day one, they are great, and they don't slip. (i do wear them under my hockey socks). At first they kind of pinched the outer, upper area above my knee, but once you wear them a couple times that pinch goes away. http://www.goaliemonkey.com/bauer-goalie-supreme-knee-guards-sr.html
  24. Man, thanks again guys. I really appreciate the feedback! I'm glad I am able to post here and everyone is mature enough to post constructive feedback for us noob tendies! I'm planning on doing a clinic again tomorrow night so I will be sure to work on all of the things mentioned! I also want to learn to do the butterfly push/slide, I haven't even tried it yet, but I have watched many videos on it.
  25. Thanks OR, I plan to keep on trucking! I am really wanting to learn the position, this new venture has renewed my passion for playing the game! My knees are doing fine actually, I just turned 40 in November. I definitely need to stretch more and I think I over did it last week, played 4 times in 7 days. I am feeling a slight strain behind my left knee, so I have been taking it easy since Saturday. I'm hoping it feels better by tomorrow night, as I want to do the Wednesday night clinic at KHS! Thank you Hills! I totally see what you mean, and I think that is how that first goal got by me in the video, my stick was down, but it was resting on the heel, leaving most of it up off the ice! I hear ya on the butterfly needing to be driven into, I'm sure in time I will get that down. Really appreciate your pointers, thank you. Thanks Badger. Each time out I feel like I am getting better at keeping the stick down, and like Hills said, once I get that back up and straight, it will help me keep the stick flat on the ice. Regarding the C/A, I am not too sure of the size, it is either a medium or large. The side angle definitely shows that it is kind of bulky, being that it is the first one I've ever worn, I'm not too sure if I should be able to feel more mobile in it than I am. Although I do think I should be slightly more mobile that I am in it. I have looked everywhere on it and couldn't find a size tag. I got it from a buddy whom is maybe an inch taller than me, so I am leaning towards a medium? Here is a pic of the gear I am using, except I am not using that glove and blocker. The C/A is an older Bauer Supreme, not sure of what exact model though.
